Sample cover letter for Full Time position at AECOM
Declassification Analyst
Dear Mr. *******,
I am very excited for the opportunity to become a Junior Declassification Analyst. During my time at ************, and even before, I have been developing my interest in learning how countries approach policy formation and national security. AECOM offers me the opportunity to obtain exposure to history, national policy, and military affairs at a level that I would not otherwise get to experience.
My courses have involved extensive reading, which consisted of both lengthy academic articles and government documents. I’ve enjoyed them immensely, especially since they gave me the opportunity to really learn more about the world around me and how countries work at the internal level. I’ve been used to reading about international relations and foreign issues in the news, but being able to see and understand the guiding documents behind the headlines was something else. The papers that that I wrote for my courses required me to put my close reading and analytical skills to work, integrating and summarizing a wide variety of government documents, scholarly articles, and news reports into coherent essays which I then presented to the class.
In addition to my coursework, I also have research experience as a research assistant under a Government professor, as part of a scholarship. During the summer of 2015, I was tasked with analyzing 16 social and legislative indicators for 186 countries, in the form of a positive or negative for each one. This job involved extensive data collection via foreign news media, international NGO sources such as Amnesty international, ILGA, and United Nations reports, and United States State Department reports, with multiple sources to support my decision for each indicator. When I came across something I was unsure of, I consulted either my professor or the post-graduate fellow whom I worked alongside with for clarification. Following the completion of my research, I summarized the results and methodology for a general audience at a research fair.
I understand that, as a Junior Declassification Analyst, I will be required read through a wide range of documents and interpret the contents within the context of the declassification guidelines, in addition to properly managing the material, and I know that my skillset will allow me to do so. I am looking forward to becoming an asset to AECOM.
Best regards,
