Sample cover letter for Internship position at Bain and Co
Associate Consultant
The Chief Recruiting Officer 27th October, 2009 Bain & Company – India
Dear Sir/Madam
Being in the business of living, I believe in looking at life just like a smart businessman would look at any business. Being particularly ambitious, I set my objective to achieve ‘maximum’ and ‘sustainable’ happiness for myself. I also believe one surest way of achieving this is to keep doing things – which I love and am good at for 16 hours a day, days after day! That brings me to a hypothesis, instinctively, that I should become a business consultant, preferably at Bain & Company. But, to be sure of this, I must support my hypothesis with honestly assessed fact.
At School, IIT Delhi, world’s biggest oil services company and an online advertisement startup – I have by and large, loved solving problems and have been reasonably good at it. International level experience and national level achievements in debating have taught me - that structured analyses and articulation of cause, impact and solutions for real life problems can indeed be a lot of fun (especially if done well)! Acting and occasionally directing for various theatre groups was also a great learning experience because It gave me the opportunity to work with and learn from so many different people (whom in general, I tended to like and vica-versa). But one experience that I really loved and was really good at was of easing into a sleep with immense gratification; after the previous day (and night) had been typically spent in the pursuit of improving the status quo at one or more student bodies. Turning around things for North India’s biggest student festival or for a student club (on the verge of getting scrapped) and in the process implementing several first ever’s was an extremely gratifying journey. And, so was, helping my hostel win the publication, cultural and best hostel trophies twice in past two years. In short, past few years on my learning curve resemble a thrilling and extremely fruitful ride, sometimes lived, at the expense of having to survive on a two hour sleep!
Now, after a month of presentations and endless networking, two things stand clear to me. All consulting firms are different from each other but Bain & Company is different for a reason which is incidentally, of particular interest to me. The tremendous emphasis laid here on enjoying one’s work life, building strong interpersonal relations with one’s colleagues and basically having fun are a testimony to the fact that the firm really values its employees. Moreover, the fact that Bain India is a relatively new setup where I would get an opportunity to grow with the firm and not merely in the firm, makes it just the company, I had been day dreaming for.The above fact based analysis suggests to me that – if working at Bain and Company and working in consulting is really about structured problem solving, working with great people at great places and creating demonstrable impact (all fairly reasonable assumption based on prior knowledge) and (if it’s a real job which pays unlike IIT life!), than there is a great chance that I might actually ‘love it’ and be ‘good at it’! In view of my initial objective of achieving ‘maximum’ and ‘sustainable’ happiness for myself, I hope to get an opportunity of working with and contributing to the continuing success of Bain and Company.
Eagerly awaiting your response,
Yours Sincerely,
