Sample cover letter for Internship position at Bain
Business analyst
Dear Sir or Ma’am,
I applied to McKinsey & Company and other top firms in the final year of my undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts at King’s College London. My application was unsuccessful, which prompted me to apply for an MSc at the London School of Economics in International Relations, which I am currently undertaking whilst reapplying to McKinsey, Bain & Company, and Boston Consulting Group.
I was first introduced to the idea of management consultancy as a way of utilizing the philosophical analysis practiced in my undergraduate degree. Getting in touch with Dr. Boris Ewenstein helped me get a feel for the application process and an idea of what it would be like to work for McKinsey. McKinsey itself has always stood out to me as the best management consulting firm to work for given its position as the biggest pure consulting firm, its client base that includes top organizations from every key industry, and Dr. Ewenstein’s excellent description of life at McKinsey as a business analyst.
After securing my place at LSE I began researching the McKinsey interview process more thoroughly and engaging with the issue tree and framework processes used to analyse different business situations. The process of breaking down any question or situation through the use of a hypothesis and then a working issue tree appeals to my analytic nature and suits the investigative tools I have acquired as an undergraduate and am expanding upon at LSE. Practicing utilizing these forms of analysis as preparation for my reapplication has not only made me a far stronger candidate, but has also given me absolute certainty and motivation towards my desire to work and thrive at McKinsey.
Though I am a British national and currently a resident of the UK I also hold an American Green Card, hence, my application to the New York office. I have been fortunate to live in several parts of America not to mention Europe, Asia and Africa. This diverse upbringing has allowed me to cultivate a welcoming and highly sociable persona that permits me to work well with or for peoples from all different backgrounds and cultures. I believe this temperament will suit me well at McKinsey given the diversity of its client base.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Most sincerely,
