Sample cover letter for Internship position at Bates White Economic Consulting

I am writing to follow up after Bates White’s information session at my University this past Wednesday. I am extremely interested in becoming a Consultant at Bates White, and have enclosed my résumé as well as an econometrics-based paper I wrote last year for your consideration.

I will be completing my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Economics in May, and am leaving University with a working knowledge of economics, mathematics, and industrial organization and strengths in econometric analysis and research. Last fall, I held my own in the fast-paced environment of a consultancy in London, providing research and data analytics support on projects dealing with such diverse topics as financial and utilities market competition and value-added analysis. This summer, I honed my eye for data quality as well as my ability to manage, edit, and manipulate massive datasets. I learned very quickly on the job to anticipate and creatively resolve issues with our data, and earned an unprecedented level of responsibility for two of our major projects. Outside of my classes and work, I successfully led a team to restart a startup-focused business and economics fraternity, and am attempting to do the same with my University chapter of NABE.

I understand that Bates White would offer an environment in which I could become more familiar with the private-sector work done by PhD economists as I consider that path, interact with clients more directly, and support my colleagues on a wide variety of projects. I would love the opportunity to work on antitrust projects like the [redacted] case I read about in my IO classes, and to learn more about the [redacted] through the work you do. I am very interested in discussing the Consulting position with you further, and will be available to work in DC as early as June.
