Sample cover letter for Internship position at Blackrock
Insight Programme
I am currently a first year law undergraduate in a 3 year course in the University of Cambridge and I am interested in the Insight Programme of your firm.
I can bring a strong level of commercial analysis and aptitude to the synergy of your Insight Programme. I was first introduced to finance while working directly under the Chief Legal Officer (General Counsel) of the investment firm Wah Hin & Co. Here, I lead summaries and created concise papers used as part of the Senior Management strategy planning, grasping complex financial situations and strategies so as to craft a more efficient understanding of said strategies. I found that the complex analytical challenges from broad perspectives was the biggest contrast for me between a legal and finance career and what initiated my interest in finance. I have also worked for a wide number of startups in a wide array of industries, even founding my own startup, MobForest, an online education platform. In particular, my experience with WeAreCXO and Agence Tesla have given me insight into financial analysis, specifically in particular companies and from a broad industry/country perspective (focusing on emerging markets). I feel I am well-poised to take advantage of the lessons behind a preliminary insight into finance and further my passion for a career in finance.
Throughout my various experiences, I have gained a sophisticated leadership, analytical and communicative skill set. As an operational firefighter lieutenant during my National Service, I managed 80 men and 14 vehicles to be deployed at various fire incidents. For my dedication and service, I was awarded Best Serviceman of the Year in 2014, out of 3000 servicemen. I have a strong analytical background, not only from my background in law but also in academia. One of my greatest academic achievement has been publishing an academic paper on the Battle of France in an American history magazine “The Concord Review” in 2013. The Concord Review is highly selective, with a publishing rate of 7%.
I have a strong competitive mentality gained as a result of my many years in sustained competitive sports. For 9 years, I represented my schools, university and various clubs in Table Tennis. I also represented my community club and school in Archery for 3 years and am now a competitive rower for my university college, recently winning the Queen’s Ergs.
Coming to Cambridge has also highlighted to me the importance of culture and working atmosphere. Under the influence, advice, pressure and encouragement of the people and resources around me, I have found myself producing works of a quality and quantity that far exceeded my own expectations. One of the key things I hope to gain at the Insight Programme is to gain a sense of the culture and how I may grow within this atmosphere. I am looking forward to learning more about the amazing culture of growth and wealth generation that exists at BlackRock.
Coming from Singapore, my aim is to eventually help further develop the Asian and South-east Asian regions for BlackRock, a firm whose international and cultural positioning is well adapted for me to undertake such a role. With the growing financial importance of Singapore and the Asian region, I believe I am well-poised to help steer the firm’s growth in that direction.
