Research assistent
I am writing to apply for a summer research assistant position at the Center for Retirement Research. Currently, I am a sophomore at Boston College majoring in Mathematics with Honors and will be graduating in May 2017. I am also part of the Honor’s program of the College of Arts and Sciences. My econometrics professor, Professor Baum, speaks very highly of the research conducted by the Center of Retirement Research. This research position will be a great place for me to apply what I have learned this semester in his class.
I believe that I am qualified for the position because of the quantitative and reading skills, which I possess. Through my time as a mathematics major, I have been exposed to advanced mathematics concepts such as multivariable calculus and abstract algebra. I am also interested in a more practical use of mathematics. For this reason, I studied econometrics to apply my mathematical talents to data analysis. My mathematics background has contributed significantly to my quantitative skills and my additional study of econometrics has prepared me for data analysis. In addition, the Boston College Honor’s program focuses upon reading and analyzing various texts. This in turn has prepared me for covering the literature in question and summarizing it efficiently.
This semester, I have become involved in the data analysis for the market research of a start up on tutoring platform. I have become more proficient in excel in order to view my data regarding the tutoring market more efficiently. Moreover, I have learned about Stata through this experience and am able to apply it to situations outside the classroom. I now know how to use my knowledge of the power curve to determine the sample size for an analysis. This experience has broadened my horizons, and instilled within me a passion for data analysis.
In addition to all these activities, my experience in self-teaching would also make me a strong a candidate, additionally I have taught myself Python in the last couple months for our start up. I am willing to learning what is necessary for this position, and confident in my ability to do so.
