1. Write a story using the title ‘The Scream at Midnight.’ Do not use clichés.
Her piercing scream lights up the house at midnight. So far she only screams but any day now, she’ll say her first words.
My husband and I have been playfully betting on what she’ll say first - ‘Mamma’ or ‘Daddy.’ I can hear my husband crooning over and over while he feeds her and grooms her, “Daddy’s little girl! Daddy loves you so much!” Sometimes, he’s not even subtle about it – “Say ‘daddy!’ Come on! Say Daddy’s little girl”
I don’t mind it though. I still believe I’ll win. When we first brought her home, she would scream and cry, lighting up the house until midnight. Nothing any of us would say could calm her down, but I knew just how to hold her, and to stop her from screaming so to help her fall asleep. Our daughter was a mammas girl - my husband needed to know that she too loved him.
I sit our daughter in her chair and my husband and I begin babbling like chickens – “Mamma! Daddy! Say Mamma!”
I pull the tape away from our little girl’s mouth.
“P-please… what do you want from me? Please let me go…”
My husbands smile falls from her face. With a heavy heart, I put the tape back over her mouth as the girl starts to scream. I take her back to the room, locking her in and shutting the lights out. When I return, I find my husband crying.
“It’s ok, honey,” I tell him, “The next one will be better. I promise.”
