Sample cover letter for Internship position at CIBC
Summer intern
Dear sir/miss,
My name is Jordan Laing and I am a second year student, studying Aerospace engineering at Queen Mary, University of London, a top 5 school for engineering in the country and a Russell group university. I believe that this summer internship program at CIBC is the perfect opportunity for me to expand my knowledge of a sector I want to be a part of in the future. I believe I have a unique skill set which suits the finance sector perfectly, but I won’t be naïve in saying that I’m the finished packaged. As a result I applying for the position which was advertised on your website today. I would value this opportunity greatly.
I am a highly talented and promising engineer with a 2:1 prediction, and I’ve had practical experience both in class and in Formula Student, in which I was chosen competitively from many applicants to work with a team to construct a Formula 1 car over a two-year period. I am also a member of the Trading and Investment society and the Engineering society. I’m also very interested in the world of finance. This extends to owning my own trading portfolio online as well as going to attend a very competitive and prestigious conference in January - UCL Finance Conference, which will focus on Investment Banking, Global Equities and Global Markets. My demonstrated passion, along with a collection of awards I have won throughout my school career, shows that I have the qualities to be a good candidate.
My determination to succeed is very much evident throughout my education, but perhaps the best demonstration of it was during my secondary school education. As a result of my dyslexia, I came out of primary school with below average grades. However, after appeal, and my proven work ethic coupled with resilient self-motivation, I managed, from being a C grade candidate at GCSE, to come out with A’s and A*’s, in turn claiming the reward for the highest level of progression at my school’s prize-giving ceremony. One of the achievements that I’m most proud of, and which foreshadowed my passion in engineering, came in Resistant Materials, where I scored 100 % in coursework consisting of Computer Aided Design as well as Computer Aided Machinery.
My determination and commitment to my studies has continued since then. Not only have I self-taught myself basic Mandarin, but in relation to engineering, I’ve also taught myself both CAD programs, Solidworks and Abacas. My participation in Formula Student as a member of the chassis team has also given me a vital insight in transferring my skills into the ‘real world’. I have also learned how to lead, how to delegate roles, and how to communicate with a team to deliver a finished product.
I hope to continue to learn and grow my specialist skills and abilities, whilst utilising my current experience, knowledge and skills gained from university. The opportunity to work for such a historic and successful company like CIBC would be extremely rewarding, that’s why I see this as a fantastic opportunity. CIBC is a fantastic opportunity, as well as being one of largest financial institutes in the world, making it the perfect education for me. I’m really passionate about the finance sector. I know believe I have to skills to make a telling contribution. I would love to get my hands dirty and join you on this adventure. As a result I believe that I can integrate into your company well due to our shared principles and aspirations.
To this date, I believe that my ability to organise my time effectively, prioritise tasks, and use my initiative to come up with innovative solutions to problems, has enabled me to create a strong foundation for my career in engineering. This coupled with my ability to lead and inspire a team of people has given me the strong platform I need to reach the goals stated earlier in the letter.
I am available for an interview at any time, and if you require any further information regarding my qualifications, or more details about my credentials, then please do not hesitate to contact me. However, for the time being, I thank you sincerely for taking the time to read my application, and I very much look forward to the opportunity to speak to you regarding this vacancy.
Yours sincerely,
Jordan Laing
