Dear President of Recruiting:

I am writing to apply for the data engineer position, as advertised on Seek.com. In August 2015, I will complete my PhD study which focuses on 2D/3D data processing and computer vision from Monash University. This gives me a range of data analysis capabilities which will meet the needs of this role.

While pursuing PhD degree, I also worked as a software developer in NICTA. I was involved with an industrial project which required to recognize the engraved text on the nameplates. My responsibilities in this role included using SVM to identify the text regions from captured 2D datasets and building neural networks to recognize the patterns from 2D data features. This position has examined and improved my ability of applying theriacal machine learning knowledge on solving real industrial problems. In addition, communication skills are essential when working as part of a large diverse team and when explaining technical findings to clients.

With regard to my ability to meet the specific requirements of this job:

 Data modelling skills: 5 years research experience in processing and analysing multi-dimensional data. Additionally, I understand and can use different machine learning approaches, such as neural network and SVM.

 Programming skills: Expertise in C++, 4 years C++ programming experience. I involved with multiple research and industrial projects which require me to write C++ programs on Linux and Windows.

 Consulting capability: Worked as a teaching associate in three undergraduate units for three years. My responsibilities included demonstrating in the lab and helping students on solving project problems. I received over 90% positive feedback from these units.

 Education background: (1) Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours, (2) Master of Science from the best engineering school in UK, (3) PhD from Monash University.

I understand that I lack the working experience on data platforms. However, I believe that my solid research and education backgrounds prove my excellent self-learning ability which can instill me the new knowledge and make me fit in this position quickly.
