Sample cover letter for Internship position at Citi-HKCSS
NGO intern
To express my passion for the Community Interns Program, I would like to begin with my career goals. Career is about applying one’s knowledge and developing his potential so as to realize self-value and make contributions to the society, which is far beyond means of subsistence. This is the reason why I am eager to devote myself to the society. In the long term, converting my interest in business into practical community service is always my dream, such as starting a local library aimed at children from low income family or starting up a social enterprise which enables the physically-challenged enjoy a more equivalent working opportunities. Managing such a business does demand considerable cross-field knowledge ranging from business to culture and charity. Therefore, in the short run, I would like to get as much exposure to various industries and organizations as possible to supplement my studies in business field, which is one of the reasons I want to participate in the Community Interns Program.
As far as I am concerned, the most unique and interesting aspect of NPOs is human-orientation. Firstly, NGOs do focus on the service coverage instead of maximizing profits. The limited resources from donors are planned to be used effectively to reach those in need. The activities are more about providing services to improve targets’ living standards than merely giving out funding. Therefore, I appreciate that the service organizations stand in line with the customers (service targets). In addition, workplace harmony is another attraction. Based on my own experience of voluntary work such as working with the Salvation Army, the social workers always gave me and my team timely and sincere support, instructing us patiently how to manage the service process. Particularly, they would consider the interest of various parties and settle them pleasantly. Last but not least, I determined to dedicate my efforts to this program in that the sharing about the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention in the briefing session has inspired me. I believe in-depth communication with other experienced colleagues and instructors is beneficial to my planning and interpersonal skills. For example, I shall learn how to raise funding for the target project and consider interest of all sides when working out the event arrangement.
When it comes to community service, it is experience and ability that are as important as passion. During my two years in university, I have managed to instill my enthusiasm for service issues into practice. At the beginning, I participated in a charity sale held in The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay (DKCH), where I gained a basic understanding that raising fund for NGOs relies on the confluence of the overall society and learned what could be the possible methods to facilitate the confluence. Later on I served as Promotion Officer of We Love Hong Kong Social Service Society, where I discussed with my partners about the year plan and successfully implemented it. Particularly through the Valentines’ Day Charity Sale for Hip Hong Society, I proactively utilized the product and pricing strategies learned in marketing class and developed event-planning skills, public relation ability and design techniques. Recently I am launching a service project under CUHK Love Your Neighbor Service Project targeted children from low-income families in Shatin. I am in charge of “Serving others” section, which involves providing a chance for children to learn the needs of the visually-challenged teenagers with respect. In the project I am cooperating with my teammates to carry out the plan within budget. Therefore I am confident that I can contribute my business knowledge and voluntary experience to this program.
Since primary school, I have been the class monitor, dorm monitor or team leader, from which I have learned to put myself in others’ shoes, listen to suggestions from different people and maintain a harmonious relationship with them. Above all, I have gained a strong sense of responsibility and stick to my duty at my best. During my middle school, I managed to lead my roommates to achieve the “Excellent Dormitory” with satisfactory sanitary condition and compliance to hostel regulations, which required long-term team work and perseverance. In conclusion, I have faith that I will spare no efforts to serve the intern program.
I am confident that my knowledge and experience will make my work effective at Citi-HKCSS Community Service Program. I have enclosed my résumé for your reference and I am looking forward to a chance to further discuss it.
