RE: Summer Articling Student Position- May 2016
Collins Barrow Calgary LLP provides the work culture that a student like me can successfully integrate in and grow into both personally and professionally. Upon research and my conversation with your employee Kelsey Sanders, I learned about Collins Barrow’s tightknit and collaborative work environment as well as strong training program to support its employees in earning their CPA. As an incoming third year Accounting, I have an interest in public accounting and would like to seize the opportunity to start my professional journey at Collins Barrow with the goal to earn my CPA after graduation.
Providing assurance, accounting, tax services, completing assignments both individually and in a team can be challenging. To me overcoming challenges is a rewarding experience. My junior years of university proved to be challenging yet my need to conquer the challenges to adjust and thrive taught me a lot about resilience and perseverance. This I can apply to the internship by pursuing tasks with the outmost dedication to complete them correctly from start to finish independently. Added to that I have the capacity to work collaboratively in team efforts as well by drawing on my experience as a Director of Corporate Relations with the Commerce Undergraduate Society. There I worked with the Business Day team to co-plan, set budget, and coordinate the Business Day Conference on site. Responsible for meeting sponsorship needs for the Business Day Conference, I developed analytical skills in doing research to select potential sponsors whose community investment portfolios were congruent with the Business Day’s purpose. Moreover I was able to refine my analysis skills further through an entrepreneurship class I took, where my role in my team was to analyze customer segments, market trends, and competitors. I see myself utilizing my analytical skills to work independently and with the general practice team to extract useful information in assignments and tasks. My company research during my time as director of corporate relations also allowed me to become well versed in the industries and major companies Calgary harbours and this experience will translate in the internship to better understand Collins Barrow’s clients’ differing values and needs. Furthermore my participation in the Wall Street Prep Boot Camp for Oil and Gas Modeling, lend me skills that are applicable to generally understand oil & gas terms and financial statements to serve Collins Barrow’s oil and gas clients better. I communicated sponsorship packages for the Commerce Undergraduate Society to potential investors via meetings, phone calls, and emails, which will allow me to effectively communicate with team members, other staff, and clients during this internship. My past experience as a General Tax Volunteer led me to deal with a high volume customer in client relations utilizing the free tax program and my continued support of the Calgary Chamber leads me to directly serve and interact with business professionals. I intend to carry this forward when dealing with clients directly during the internship.
To receive firsthand training in public accounting, learning to complete assignments individually and in a team setting would better my understanding of accounting and solidify my knowledge of accounting in a practical sense. An interview would allow me to introduce myself in a personal way. You can reach me anytime at the above given contact information. I look forward to hear from you and would like to thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
