Sample cover letter for Internship position at D.E Shaw

I am currently a sophomore at UC, pursuing a double degree in Economics and Philosophy. I am writing to let you know that I am strongly interested in the opportunity to intern at D.E Shaw Group.

Last summer, I worked at Citi Finance department where I updated the market reports, ran the accounting database program, and filed data on company’s financials. Working in a fast-paced environment, I greatly enjoyed learning about the market and researching different market reports such as the credit rating. The why’s and how’s of the market transactions fascinate me immensely. For example, in 2014, when Monsanto acquired the weather big data company, the Climate Corporation, I was intrigued by the insight of Monsanto to acquire a seemingly unrelated software company. My passion lies in understanding, not just merely knowing facts and numbers, but the market, industry, and companies. I want to delve into understanding the elements that comprise successful businesses, business models and markets.

At D.E Shaw Group, I am ready to learn and improve my knowledge of finance—whether it is making PowerPoint, building comparatives, or doing excel. Being able to indirectly experience investment analysis and quantitative research in New York is a huge asset for a person who aspires to be in the finance industry.
