Sample cover letter for Full Time position at DRG Consulting

POSITION:

Consulting

In May of 2015, I graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a minor in Chemistry. I am interested in this position because for some time now, the confluence of clinical medicine and business has been of profound interest to me. In November of 2015, I was accepted into medical school, an uncommon path for an economics major. Yet in the excitement of that acceptance, I found that I still gravitated more toward the business side of medicine. I believe that my background in economics and healthcare, as well as my extensive experience in clinical settings will allow me to contribute immediately as an Associate at DRG.

As an Economics major, I took coursework in statistics and econometrics that familiarized me with statistical software and data analysis. In particular, I got a lot of practice using Excel and Stata to develop and analyze regression models. In ECON 482, Health Economics, we looked at Medicare/Medicaid extensively as well as other payer systems. The course also offered insight into the decision-making processes of industry leaders and the policies that continue to shape the field. To supplement this more broad perspective, I did courses in community health to develop a more granular understanding of the issues affecting particular healthcare systems, various regions, and marginalized demographics.

I am different from most Economics majors in that I have spent a lot of time in clinical settings, as I was formerly pursuing a career in clinical medicine. By spending time immersed in teams of competent healthcare professionals, I have gleaned a thorough understanding of what makes well-respected clinics and hospitals tick, at every level of care. Accessibility and relentlessly engaging employees are certainly the foundation, and they are well complemented by strategic partnerships with an array of firms, suppliers, and physician groups. I know that having this experience will allow me to not only develop robust relationships with DRG’s counterparties in healthcare, but also to offer the kind of strategic perspective that only an insider could provide.
