Sample cover letter for Internship position at Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
Intern
Dear Sir or Madam,
Currently in my year abroad at SciencesPo Paris, I am studying European Studies at King’s College London and would like to apply for a two months internship within the delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in June and July 2015.
Over the last years, I seized each and every opportunity to get involved in the real world, and when possible, in an international environnement. Thus, my experiences in finance and, more so, my year spent working as a part-time equity analyst at HSBC in London and Madrid made me realise the importance and impact of financial flows in global economies. During my internship in Spain, as an analyst last summer, I was assigned to the Research department on Latin America. These two months spent analysing the economic performances on this continent only deepened my interest in developing countries. The major problems these countries faces: social inequalities, gender inequalities as well as sustainable development and educational issues are only one side of the story. These issues, although real should not hide the opportunities that the ressources, the infrastructures and the dynamic populations of this continent have to offer.
My various trips to Brazil, Mexico and on other developing continents struck me with the cultural differences and diverse lifestyles I have observed. Each of these experiences strengthened my ambition to play a role in the development of emerging countries, both on the economic aspect and on the cultural and educational one. This last point, education, lately became for me an essential value I would like to promote. Taking advantage of the light timetable my year abroad offers, I decided to dedicate some time and energy to this cause. Firstly, I got involved in the Scoubidoo association in SciencesPo to tutor in English children and young adults from disadvantaged neighborhoods. Secondly, I am working part- time since September for MIPISE, a start-up that develops crowdfunding platforms. I raised the idea of creating platforms to finance scholarships and student entrepreneurial projects. With the help of the MIPISE team, we succeeded in convincing IAE - Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management to launch their platform. I am now in charge of assisting the student union developing it and I am working on a targeted approach for SciencesPo and business schools. This formidable tool could allow meritorious students with financial issues to pay the fees and study in the university they have been accepted in.
Nonetheless, I feel like the skills I acquired from these experiences could be best allocated by using them on the topic I know best: the European Union. Over the past two years, my studies focused on the history, institutions, actors and policies of the European Union from its beginnings to its most recent developments. This course allowed me to
analyse the complexity of EU institutions, the role of interest groups and political parties in the EU policy-making system.
That is why I feel working within the diplomatic mission of the European Union, an institution representing more than half a billion people living in 28 member states would be an outstanding environment to achieve this goal. This union, the world’s leading economic power and the birthplace of an ancient and diverse culture has, I believe, an important role to play in the political and economic emancipation of Trinidad and Tobago. Conversely, promoting and strengthening bilateral ties and dialogue with this country can only be beneficial for the European Union.
Hoping you will positively welcome my offer, I remain at your disposal.
With kindest regards,
