Research Intern
Dear Professor
I am currently enrolled in the Undergraduate Economics Programme at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. I have been researching on the Presence and Condition of the third gender in India. However, inspite of the work done in this area by people around the world, we haven’t had the privilege of having an estimate that is credible and defies differences on account of region and varied cultural practices.
The definition of a person belonging to the third gender thus remains ambiguous. The benefits which should therefore accrue to the members of this community (along the same lines as benefits for backward classes) fail to reach them due to lack of a basis of identification for them. There are several cases of frauds in an attempt to make quick money by living under a disguised identity. The actual deprived who yearn for respectful, dignified jobs and a normal life are the worst sufferers.
In such a scenario, brain mapping is a possible way out to distinguish between the actually marginalised and con men. However, for a country like ours, it is very expensive and not hence feasible. There exists an alternative testing mechanism-Psychometric Tests. This test can be conducted to assess the gender standing of a person-As to where a person stands on the gender spectrum. This is saying that gender has an existence independent of sex and sexual orientation. This is overruling the assertions made by Yanagisako and Collier.
I have read your views on this subject in “Gendered Bodies: The case of the third gender in India”. Saying that gendered practices are the practices which invoke a cultural reference with sexed body would help to establish a firm ground on which we can establish gender as a comprehensive parameter of an individual’s identity.
I wish to devise a mechanism to make the gender of an individual a unique and independent measure of his/her identity. I would be highly obliged if you can provide me with your valuable guidance on the subject.
I am attaching my resume for your kind perusal. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,
