Dear Hiring Professional,
My name is _______ and recently I spoke with your junior producer, ____________, who informed me about an opening for the position of office coordinator. She recommended I contact you about this job because of my strong interest in independent news, commitment to social justice and extensive administrative experience. I am excited to hear about this position as I feel it would give me the opportunity to combine my academic specialization with my previous work experience within an organization where I feel very passionately about the work being done.
My father, who is a regular listener of WBAI, first introduced me to Democracy Now when I was a child. Without explicitly telling me what I must do, he always led by his example and showed me the importance of seeking alternative news sources and questioning the mainstream narrative. I became a regular listener of Democracy Now while I was an undergraduate student, and his political consciousness continues to be a source of inspiration in my life and work.
For years, Democracy Now has been a staple in my daily news intake. Smart phones have revolutionized the way information is disseminated, and our society is recognizing the bias in mainstream media more than ever. Long before these advancements in technology or shifts in public opinion, Democracy Now has filled the void in independent media: In this way, your organization is truly a visionary. Your program was crucial for my ability to offer a nuanced analysis of various international issues throughout my studies in graduate school, particularly in regard to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which is the subject of my thesis.
As part of the requirements for my degree, I traveled and worked in South Africa during Summer 2015, where I conducted research in collaboration with the University of Cape Town on the state of maternal-child health. Although I came to South Africa with one required project, I became involved in an additional research project due to a personal desire to explore activism in Cape Town. I compiled interviews with various activists to create a cognitive map based on their lives. The African Centre for Cities of the University of Cape Town published my work. Throughout my trip I was able to stream Democracy Now, which helped me maintain a routine and feel at home.
I have more than a decade of administrative experience, including five years at the executive level. As someone who has worked fulltime while pursuing my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, I have had to perfect my time management and organizational skills in order to excel professionally and scholastically.
Many thanks in advance for your time and attention to my application. I hope to hear from you so that we can discuss this position in further detail. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any additional information.
