Sample cover letter for Internship position at Department of Education

Dear Internship Program Director,

I am applying for the summer 2015 Student Volunteer Internship position at the Department of Education. I am a Statistics major and German minor at [...] University, and I will receive my degree in Spring 2016. In addition to my statistical background, I also have experiences in the area of education. Having the privilege of serving as an intern with ED would provide me with opportunities to use my skills and talents to benefit the department and me.

I have taken various courses relating to statistical interpretation, such as regression and variance analysis. I also have experience in statistical computing packages, including SAS and R. My knowledge in the field of statistics provides me with a scientific lens through which I can approach issues. At the same time, it also allows me to maintain the subjective viewpoint needed in the completion of projects within ED.

I have worked as a staff member of the after-school programs provided by [...]. I have had the opportunities to work directly with children of all ages and to design activities that are educationally beneficial. Through these experiences, I became aware of my passion for education, and of my desire to advocate for the growth and development of our students.

Upon graduation, I plan to continue pursuing my passions for statistics and education. I hope to use my skills in data interpretation to support the improvement and innovations of the education system. With the right experiences in combining these two fields, I believe I can achieve this goal. The opportunity of an internship with ED can bring me closer to my aspirations.
