Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to apply for the Corporate Finance graduate programme in your corporate and investment banking department.

I have the problem-solving skills required for a career in this field, improved and further developed through my degree in Chemistry. I frequently had to apply my knowledge to complex and novel problems in exams. I find great satisfaction in being creative and coming up with solutions, and I believe a career in corporate finance will challenge me and enable me to grow and learn.

I also have strong analytical skills which I have demonstrated repeatedly during my university career, most recently use while completing my dissertation for my master’s degree, titled ‘The Determinants of a Firm’s Borrowing Source: The Impact of the Global Financial Crisis’. I downloaded my financial data from Compustat and Capital IQ and analysed it using the statistical software Stata. Carrying out this dissertation has also strengthened my corporate finance knowledge and understanding, specifically about capital structure decisions.

I have good knowledge of basic accounting practices and standards, and am able to interpret the basic financial statements, achieving marks of 76% and 78% respectively in the ‘Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance’ and ‘International Financial Reporting’ modules of my master’s degree. I am proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

I can easily adapt to new roles and environments. While working as a waitress at Revolution Bar Group, I was named employee of the week in just my second week due to how well I had picked up the role and coped during what was an especially busy period. I believe I can cope with any challenge I am faced with.

I have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. I am able to communicate difficult ideas in a way that is clear and concise. In the second year of my Chemistry degree I obtained 79% in my ‘Science Communication’ module, in which I had to take a complex area of scientific research and write a paper on it that someone with only basic science knowledge. Every year as part of my French module I had to give a 15-minute presentation in French about a news topic I had found interesting, and answer questions about this on the spot, always achieving grades of at least 65%.

I have chosen Deutsche Bank due to its outstanding reputation, both as a financial institution and an employer. I know that Deutsche Bank invests heavily into the training and development of its employees and I will therefore benefit greatly from working here. Deutsche Bank has great opportunities for progression and I would love to pursue a long-term career with you.
