Sample cover letter for Full Time position at District Attorney office

POSITION:

Complaint room assistant

I’m writing to apply for either the Complaint Room Legal Assistant or Special Unit Legal Assistant part time position (see the current openings on the next page). With over 20 years of experience in legal related fields, I am confident my skill set will meet your needs. While most of my work has been in the area of federal and state regulations, I also have some experience in criminal law as well.

I started working for a company in 1990 which specializes in financial software (billing, budgeting and cost analysis). My responsibilities included reviewing regulations to ensure the software was compliant with the changes in the law. I first got my paralegal certification and then in 1992 decided to get my law degree on a part time basis. I graduated in 1999 but did not take the bar exam since my job did not require it.

In addition to working for the company, I was also a part time partner in a law practice which did predominately criminal cases. I helped manage the office, set up case files, review motions and performed other legal tasks until the practice closed in 2010. In 2013, due to a corporate re-structure, my job was eliminated and I was laid off with severance.

At the urging of my family I took some time off, after which I decided to change the direction of my legal career to what I have always wanted to do, criminal law. I have been exposed to the defense aspect of it through my law practice experience.

I started taking law review courses last fall and sat for the bar in February. Additionally, I have gotten my mediator’s certification. I would very much like to work for the District Attorney’s office with the future goal of becoming an Assistant District Attorney.
