GOT THE JOB? Yes
3 years ago, I opted for Economics at the IGCSE Level, and it has gripped me ever since. Apart from the elegance with which it was taught to me, the elegance of the subject itself was so great that I saw the world and its workings in a different light. The immense application of the subject not only in our financial markets, but also in the ways we coordinate basic human exchanges was all governed by the laws of economics. However, as we learnt about markets and governments in Economics, I soon realised that Politics governs the construct within which the laws of economics function, and therefore I began reading news outlets like The Economist and The Guardian.
Being a citizen of one of the world’s fastest growing economies, I have seen the urge to grow and prosper almost everywhere, from my own family to the outside environment. Not only has this urge osmotically become part of me, I have also always wanted to understand this urge, amongst the other ways the human mind functions and interacts with each other. This is where my interest for Philosophy grew as well, and I began reading The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant, which focuses on the greatest thinkers in our world, their thoughts and the political situation that governed their times.
After reading on the thoughts on society and human interactions, I realised that Philosophy was the outlet that the world’s leaders took to, when Economics and Politics were at a crossroads. However, I soon began to realise that it isn’t a linear chain, whereby Philosophy was always the answer. I realised that all three subjects compliment each other in a very circular fashion. My subjects in the IB at higher level, which include Mathematics, Economics and English, prepare me for grasping concepts in these three disciplines well and have helped me in developing intellectual curiosity. In terms of my reading for the three subjects, I have enjoyed reading the Undercover Economist by Tim Harford, the Story of Philosophy by Will Durant, Introduction to Political Philosophy by Jonathan Wolff, Freakonomics and doing independent research on politics and economics, along with philosophy, and being in touch with the global news through news outlets like The Guardian, and The Economist.
I realised that my interest and knowledge in current affairs could a medium through which I could develop myself vocally and learn how to express myself effectively. Hence, ever since the 8th grade I have been deeply involved in Model United Nations (MUNs), both locally and internationally. I have been part of 3 MUN Secretariats, being the director of committees such as the Human Rights Council (HRC), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the Security Council (SC). However, I believe my strength lies in being a delegate, where I have won awards for being the Best Delegate in multiple conferences like SpringMUN and BDSMUN, and have won Outstanding Delegate at Harvard MUN in China (2015). I believe the experience of being a “MUNer” has taught me valuable insights into diplomatic expression of thoughts, understanding multiple countries foreign policies and most importantly has taught me how to work cohesively with a group of likeminded people.
I believe the lessons learnt from my MUN experience, along with my educational background, is a good base for the career path that I want to pave. In the future I intend to make a career in the Investment Banking sector as I believe my potential lies in analysis of market trends, and utilisation of economic and political theories in the real world. I realised this during an Internship I took up at ICICI bank in the summer of 2014, which was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. However, my other deep interest, which overlaps with Economics in many respects is Politics, and hence I would like to also contribute back to the Indian Society by working for a government organisation, like the Reserve Bank of India, in the later part of my career.
Away from school, I am an avid reader of fictional works as well, and enjoy endurance running and playing football (soccer). In my free time, I love to watch the videos uploaded to the UK Parliament channel on YouTube, such as the PMQs (Prime Ministers Questions). I use these activities as means to constructively distract myself from work, while also thoroughly enjoying them.
