I recently read the book “market wizards” from Jack D. Schwager, which contains a collection of interviews with some of the most successful traders and hedge fund managers, about their backgrounds, experiences, and techniques. The book covers the entire spectrum from purely technical to purely fundamental, and while the book was published more than twenty years ago and the industry has changed massively since then, the underlying core principles that lead to trading success stayed the same. I liked especially the fact, that the book was very different to finance-related classes at my university, which mostly emphasize that markets are efficient and investors generally cannot expect to outperform the market through active management. It was interesting that while the strategies from the interviewed traders where very different, they had several facts in common, such as significant level of discipline, patience and a rigid risk control. Looking back, I enjoyed especially the interview with Jim Rogers, who was co-founder of the Quantum-Fund, which gained 4200% in a time where the S&P advanced only about 47%.
