Sample cover letter for Internship position at GPIUS
Student Director
It is with great interest and enthusiasm that I am applying for the position of Student Director for the X. I am confident that my background working in education, multi-cultural organizations, and leadership development programs would be an asset to the team and truly be beneficial for the international students that the Student Director supports. Two of the organizations I have been involved in have allowed me to develop international and multi-cultural communication skills and cultural relations competency that would strongly assist the program.
As the Empowerment Discussion Advisor and Student Leader for Y, I have had the privilege to work with international high school students from Japan. Y partners with Japan’s Ministry of Education to develop leadership and critical thinking skills for high school level youths to prepare them for the globalizing society. As the Empowerment Discussion Advisor, I assisted the Program Director and Coordinators by leading discussions on: the various types of leadership, the difference between a leader and a boss, and how to develop leadership skills. Consequently, I also tutored these students in English, with various ranges of difficulty for my curricula depending on their levels of English comprehension by having public speaking, project management, and entrepreneurship workshops. As the Student Leader, I was also involved in field trips and activities when we toured San Francisco and the UC Berkeley campus, and I facilitated physical activities that would build sportsmanship, social skills, physical coordination, and humility. This experience has allowed me to get a firm understanding of working in an environment where cultures may clash and communication may be difficult at times, but through this, I have been able to gain proficiency in intercultural communication, student relations, and developing flexible academic curricula that would be useful for your program working with international students.
In addition to working extensively with high school students, I also have a diverse experience working with college students. Within Z, I have held two directorship positions, but I would like to highlight my position of Director of Public Relations for Z1. As the Public Relations Director, I direct a full department of 5 managers and 4 interns, all of whom range from first years to third years, in political constituency work, media and social media projects, and professional development. In contrast to many other Directors I have worked with, and in contrast to my past experiences with my own supervisors, I do not follow a strict top-down approach, although I do practice this method for effectiveness and organization. Drawing from my experience with GPIUS and TAL High School Mentorship, I work one on one with each manager and intern to ensure that the work is being accomplished and that each person feels that he or she has an important contribution to make for the department. From my personal experience and from my research, I discovered that affirming each student and providing the personal attention encourages motivation, which results in higher work proficiency and better attitude. In addition, since many of the interns are freshmen, I take the time to offer advice and counseling on academics, college life, the Berkeley city, and job prospects. As the Student Director, I am confident that I can easily transfer this ability of balancing personal and professional responsibilities to encourage dialogue and commitment. Not only will I strive to be a role model as an incoming upperclassman, I will also strive to build a community within my team to foster strong relations and provide a safe and comfortable space for each to thrive.
Overall, I truly believe that my experiences, skillsets, and knowledge can help facilitate your delivery of a successful education service. For an extended list of my activities, please refer to my resume. If you have any questions or would like to meet with me personally to discuss my qualifications and experiences, please feel free to reach me via cell or email listed in my resume. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
