Dear Internship Coordinator, My hometown of Chittagong is not an exceptional city one could grow up in. But fortunately, it happened to be home to the largest ship-breaking yard in the world. As a child, I would spend hours trying to understand the process of taking apart these intricately designed machines. Years later, as a mechanical engineering student, I would dedicate countless more hours to understand the process of designing these machines instead. I recognized that exercising my passion for building systems was infinitely more rewarding than just settling for taking them apart. That is my motivation as I am writing to apply for the 2016 Design Summer Intern position at General Dynamics Electric Boat.
Through my academic program, I have cultivated a rooted interest in dynamic systems and product design. By spearheading design projects, I have fostered that interest to contribute to the creative progress of the team at GDEB. For my Product Design project, I conceptualized a flywheel generator that would be used to improve the efficiency of rickshaws in third-world countries. With the help of my peers and my professor, I was able to design the entire prototype in a CAE environment using Creo Parametric. Personally, I found the exposure to more powerful 3D CAD software such as PTC Creo and CATIA extremely beneficial. Although these were more difficult to use compared to traditional software (such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD), they helped to firmly cement what I had previously learned regarding technical models and drafting. Outside of my academic instruction, I focused on advancing my communication skillset by engaging in community projects. As a Project manager at BYLC, I was responsible for facilitating the implementation of filtration systems in local slum areas. The experience taught me the effectiveness of working in sync with my co-workers and the rewards of being meticulous: attributes that I now strive to highlight through all my work. Furthermore, as a freelance tutor over the past two summers, I utilized the opportunity to polish my conversational and problem-solving skills. I feel proud to report that my work impacted many students who were preparing to sit for their college entrance examinations.
As the premiere builder of submarines in the nation, GDEB represents an incredible platform to gain professional experience and to build upon my affinity for engineering design. It provides a learning opportunity to immerse myself in the innovative culture that has been the trademark of your company for so many years. Therefore, I find myself ready for the next learning challenge under the tutelage of the very best in the industry. I am very interested in interviewing for this position. Thank you for your time and I hope you have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Tahmin S Chowdhury
