Sample cover letter for Internship position at Government Congressman's Office
Intern
GOT THE JOB? Yes
Dear Congressman XXXX,
Upon discovering your summer internship application, I was not merely interested in applying for this position, but also extremely enthusiastic. Currently, I am a freshman at University with an intended major in XXXX. Alongside having a strong interest in government, public policy, and law, I have also had experience with community outreach and office assistance.
I believe one of my most distinguishing factors is that I attended a brand new high school and was part of the school’s first graduating class. As mere freshmen, we were given the chance to strive towards our aspirations without having previously established traditions hinder the journey. As the president of my school’s environmental club, XXXX, I assisted in creating and running my high school’s recycling program. This required an immense amount of community outreach: asking local companies for recycling bin donations, contacting recycling companies to partner with our school, and simply raising awareness to our peers and community about being environmentally-friendly. In addition, I spoke at several local elementary schools regarding the rules of recycling and its importance; gaining considerable experience with community outreach. However, I understand you are also seeking an applicant that can perform office tasks. As a teacher’s assistant during my senior year in high school, I mainly performed clerical duties such as typing up documents, organizing papers, and running errands. Oftentimes, I was simply given a list of tasks that needed to be accomplished and was responsible for taking the initiative to figure out how to accomplish each one. This clerical experience improved my organizational skills, time management, and ability to work without much guided instruction.
Lastly, starting in YEAR, I also volunteered to coach a youth basketball team at my local XXXX. There were two seasons a year and each season lasted approximately 10 weeks with weekly practices and games. I was given the task to plan each practice, host team bonding activities, and coach the weekly basketball games, which further improved my organizational skills. I often communicated with the parents regarding schedule logistics and player improvements. With the players, I realized that trying to keep a group of 5th and 6th graders engaged for an hour was a difficult task, and thus, learned creative solutions to keep practice fun but productive. Both of these aided in the development of strong interpersonal skills as well as learning how to take initiative.
I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you in person and can be reached either at XXXXX or (XXX) XXX-XXXX. Please let me know if you require any further information or documents. Thank you for taking the time to review my application.
Sincerely,
XXXXX
