Sample cover letter for Internship position at Grontmij

POSITION:

Student Academic Placement

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for a summer placement/internship at Grontmij. I am a Stage 3 undergraduate student at Newcastle University, currently studying for an M.Eng (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, and expecting a 2:1.

I wish to pursue work experience with Grontmij as I would like to apply the skills that I have developed during my undergraduate studies in an industrial environment. The projects which Grontmij have undertaken in assessing the risk of floods and computer modelling is the type of work which I find fascinating.

The Dunoon Flood Risk Assessment is a type of project which I find particularly appealing. The use of hydrologic and hydraulic modelling was particularly interesting, as I have studied them for a Hydrosystems Engineering module, and was able to understand how they could be used on a practical basis. Furthermore, for a design project module I have been working with software to model floods on a site to then design a sustainable urban drainage system. I feel that an opportunity to work at Grontmij would enhance my understanding of flood risk and management.

The experience gained from an internship would be a great introduction to a career in engineering, and water engineering in particular. I have studied engineering with the intention of helping others. Through my travels across Brazil and Thailand I have witnessed the effects of excessive rainfall and poor sanitation, and I want to know what can be done to help such communities. I feel a work placement at Grontmij would provide the perfect motivation to pursue this dream.

Please find enclosed my CV for your attention. I look forward to discussing my application further with you at interview.

Yours sincerely
