Sample cover letter for Internship position at HP

POSITION:

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Dear Hiring Manager for HP

I am currently a second year Mechanical Engineering Student at Coventry University, on track for a 1st BEng (hons) which is the British equivalent of a 4.0/4.0 GPA. Part of my degree program is the opportunity to take part in a year-long industrial placement beginning in summer of 2016 and I was particularly attracted to the role of Mechanical Engineering Intern at HP, specifically as part of the LaserJet R&D team.

After spending 3 months of summer living and working in Pennsylvania, I gained a new perspective on American culture. This further fuelled my existing desire to find an internship, and ultimately, pursue a career in the United States after graduating from university. I found the role using the Engineering department’s dedicated placement website and after reading the job description I was immediately attracted to the position. Not only did the role itself excite me, but also working for such an immensely world renowned company is something that I believe will develop my engineering potential to an extent that no other company could.

Something that I particularly admire about HP is the constant need to be as innovative as possible and lead the way with so many new technologies. For example, TouchScreen PC’s and CMYK printer cartridges were conceived and manufactured by HP in the 1980’s, the world today would be very different if these developments had not taken place. One particularly revolutionary product from HP was the first wireless all in one printer, the Photosmart 2510. This amazing piece of engineering paved the way for virtually every other printer to follow it. This hunger for improvement in every area and constant development makes HP the perfect company for me to gain industrial experience at.

As detailed on my CV, my main interest lies in the design area of engineering as it requires a combined knowledge of the engineering fundamentals alongside the ability to problem solve in a more creative environment. Through my studies so far I have had experience with CAD using CATIA and Solidworks, FEA with ANSYS and made use of MATLAB on a number of occasions. Also, as part of my design module in first year I compiled a technical drawing portfolio which was used to assess the communication of design proposal. This portfolio helped me achieve a 1st overall in the module.

I am very interested in interviewing for this opportunity and am confident that my skills and experiences prove me to be a credible candidate. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,
