Design Engineer
Dear Recruiting team at Honda Jet,
When design and engineering come together, a beautiful product is created. I believe that your company has successfully and excellently done this, and that is why I would like to work for you. My name is _______ and I am applying for the Design Engineer-Flight Test position at your Greensboro facility. I believe that I am a great fit for this position because of my experiences within and out of school. Currently, I am finishing my graduate degree at NC State University where I am studying applied mechanics. I plan to graduate with my MS in December of 2014. In May of 2013, I received my BS in Aerospace Engineering with a 3.5/4.0.
During my college career I have been a part of numerous group and solo projects. In my senior year of undergraduate school, I participated in a yearlong design process with a group of nine. We worked together to design, build, and then fly a UAV that was intended for the US Coast Guard. We conducted many experiments on our aircraft to prove it was flight worthy. This included wing strength tests, propeller and motor tests, and CG balancing tests. That same year, I was involved in a separate design challenge. My team won the Spirit Aerosystem's Global Design Challenge for designing a 170 person fuselage. The team consisted of students living across the world. Two team members lived in India, and two lived in Kansas. We collaborated across time zones to produce an effective solution to the problem given to us. Last summer, I worked for NAVAIR at MCAS Cherry Point where I was part of the fixed wing strength team. I designed repairs for the AV-8B Harrier-II and V-22 Osprey. This included analysis of composite and metallic structures. During graduate school, I have been conducting ballistic impact analysis on Kevlar using FEA methods. I am very proud of my work and my ability to work with teammates throughout the design process.
For these reasons and more, I believe I would work very well at Honda Jet. I am enthusiastic about being a part of a company that designs beautiful functional pieces of machinery. As far as my leadership abilities, I was a Younglife leader throughout college. Younglife is a worldwide high school ministry where I was consistently involved in the lives of many high school kids. Not only did it allow me to reach out to others based on my beliefs, but it also helped me develop excellent speaking and social skills. Along with these skills, I have innate mechanical skills that I have developed through working on my 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider and by building and working on bicycles for the past 5 years.
