Dear Recruitment Team,
I would like to be considered for the 2016 Investment Banking Summer Associate position in the Industrials Group at Houlihan Lokey. I am a self-motivated Structural Engineer and Project Manager with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the US Coast Guard Academy. I have over five years of experience in budget management, acquisitions, and design on a range of structural plans averaging $1.5 billion. I possess thorough knowledge of the processes of financing engineering projects as well as excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, the latter of which I am further honing as an MBA student at the University of Georgetown McDonough School of Business.
As a structural engineer in the US Coast Guard I have worked on a diverse array of jobs, including a complex housing rehab project in the Bay Area totaling $34M in addition to numerous demolition and renovations that covered a range of groundwork. My skills in excel modeling in addition to my focus on getting a job done well and on time, have resulted in all projects being completed successfully with very positive feedback from managers and clients. Furthermore, in the last year, I interned at Sylvatex, a small biodiesel-additive manufacturing startup located in the heart of San Francisco, where I designed their first-ever fuel-tank farm for large industrial customers and managed over 250K of the company’s monthly accounts receivables and payables across 20 vendors and customers. I also helped Sylvatex pitch its products to well-established investors in Silicon Valley, securing four major investor relationships over a three-week span. Through my experiences in the Coast Guard and at Sylvatex I realized I am much more interested in pursuing business, specifically technology-focused investment banking because I want to make a greater impact by organizing talent and resources to provide financial solutions for companies and private investors in a fast-paced environment.
I am most attracted to Houlihan Lokey over the other middle-market investment banks because of its impressive track record and specific industry knowledge in the Industrial financial advisory sector. Not only has Houlihan Lokey been setting the standard for the industry since its founding in 1972, the company has built a strong network and presence by providing strategic mergers & acquisitions advice and execution, agented private capital financing services and board advisory services. This reflects an ambitious vision and ability to adapt to the constantly changing environment. I also believe that the company has developed a strong brand for itself in that it is primarily invested in companies that have a very high return on un-levered capital which will remain prominent over time with secular changes across cycles. This principle has helped the company set a much higher benchmark than its competitors.
With my skills and drive to achieve excellence in everything I do, I believe I will be a valuable addition to the investment banking team in helping provide analytical-based solutions to assess and develop new business ideas, perform data-intensive analyses, and help improve the way Houlihan Lokey serves its clients.
