Sample cover letter for Internship position at JP Morgan

POSITION:

Operations

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to express my interest in gaining a Business Associate Summer Internship with McKinsey & Company within Operations division. I am a highly capable, driven Business Management 2nd year at University of Leeds, with a collection of work experiences and I am keen to develop my career within the consulting sector. I believe that this internship would be a fruitful opportunity to further develop my knowledge, skills and career within a world leading consulting firm.

My motivation in applying for this position stems from my long term ambition in to wanting to pursue a career in Management Consulting. I was lucky enough to gain a work experience placement with Deloitte and as a result of exposure to this division I left the internship inspired and hungry to want to learn more and gain further experience. I believe my diverse working and academic career has strengthened and developed key areas, such as analytical, interpersonal and organisational skills in which I believe has prepared me to make an immediate positive contribution to McKinsey and its fantastic range of clients. My ability to analyse data and numbers, extends far beyond my high academic achievements in math and economics. My previous job experience with Informed Financial Planning involved analysing forecasts and investment bonds in order to direct investment solutions to clients based on their attitude to risk. I believe being competent in this area is imperative in order to succeed within operations. The division explicitly focuses on improving clients’ supply chains, manufacturing and procurement methods, therefore analysing performance data is crucial to identify underlying solutions to improve efficiency. In addition to this, I have had a broad exposure to a range of different people from different walks of life, through liaising with professional clients at audit sites within my internship with Deloitte to team mates in my badminton team from Malaysia and Singapore. I believe from these range of experiences I have enriched my own growth, and I am keen to further develop this as a result of learning about McKinsey’s diverse range of global clients through a hands on experience in analysing client’s performance.

One of the motivating factors that attracted me to this firm was McKinsey’s impressive track record as a global market leader, which was settled through discovering McKinsey’s strong values and organisational culture. Such values that focus on the highest standards in their people, client relationships and results, with exceptional talent and integrity reflected in McKinseys collaborative culture. I have been inspired by this winning business driver and believe
In addition, in its practice areas, it addresses strategic, organizational, operational and technological issues, always with a focus-according to the firm-of doing what is right for the client's business, not what is best for McKinsey's bottom line.

From researching and looking into BCG, I am particularly attracted to their entrepreneurial corporate culture who invest in their people, their development and their ideas. They focus on employees with strong individual character and personality which is strongly reflected in all the company's operations as BCG define success through delivering superior results in a sustainable manner. As a business driver with a significant focus on high performing teams, promoting resilience and diversity, I think based on my high sporting and academic achievements I could fit into that ethos. Because of my highly motivated attitude lends itself perfectly to grow and develop within BCG and ultimately become a management consultant, I am looking to capitalise on any opportunities for learning and self-improvement to satisfy BCG's goals and values to progress and continue to be the best in the global market.
