Sample cover letter for Internship position at JPMorgan

POSITION:

Sprint Analyst

21st November 2014

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is X and I am currently a First Year student in University of Bristol, studying for a BSc in Economics and Mathematics. I was recently introduced to your firm via Steven Hunter at a networking event in Zero Degrees, Bristol where he reinforced my desire pursuing a position in the Spring Weeks: Experience the Markets and the sales & trading desk in general.

J.P. Morgan’s leading position in combined revenue generated from equities and debt trading desks in 12 out of the past 13 quarters is highly respectable and, as a result, I believe that the firm can offer me more than any other through its Sales, Trading & Research program. As a highly ambitious person I want to become the best at my passion of equity trading and it only makes logical sense to start on my path by being surrounded by the best at J.P. Morgan. The culture at J.P. Morgan would be a large influence in me achieving this goal especially through the flat structure and approachability of the firm and its members highlighted by Emma’s alumni testimonial on the J.P. Morgan website and I look forward to eye opening challenges that I will be faced with. The firm’s emphasis on diversity is very important to me and reminds me of the international and diverse culture that I experienced living at home in Bahrain. Spring Week: Experience the Markets offers a highly interactive and real life aspect; more so than the spring weeks offered by the other investment banks and I believe that this will provide me with the greatest opportunities to develop.

I believe that my experiences and extra-curricular activities make me a good fit for J.P. Morgan and the sales & trading environment which I am very keen to work in. For two consecutive years I was part of Bahrain Bourse’s Trade Quest virtual stock exchange programme involving eight competing teams in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Bahrain Bourse (BHB). As a risk manager in my first year, my exposure to the market was maximised and I gained a range of analytical skills that I believe I can offer in a team at J.P. Morgan. Through close attention to market outlook, news and technical analysis I ensured that my team maintained a Sharpe ratio higher than that of both the S&P500 and Bahrain All Share Index. We then earned the Highest Return in Bahrain Bourse and Best Financial Return in Bahrain Bourse (highest Sharpe Ratio) awards. In my second year through researching the Financials, Healthcare and Technology sectors, I improved my commercial awareness and trading experience. During this period I pitched several of our highest earning stocks such as Montage Technology Group Ltd which delivered a 27% return. Through co-leading the team and communicating effectively and efficiently I honed my teamwork skills and by delivering presentations that were to our best standards to the panel of investors and judges thus receiving the Best Team Presentations and Runner-up Team awards. My dedication and initiative was put to test when I travelled to Maekok village in Thailand to help build a school along the Thai-Burmese border. Through determination and hard work as a team, we managed to lay the entire foundation of the school and the beginnings of the first floor walls. I aim to deliver the same hard work in J.P. Morgan against ever challenge and obstacle that I am put against.

I find J.P. Morgan to be the right place for me in what it offers and I believe that I am a great fit for the firm. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

X
