Sample cover letter for Internship position at KBR
Process Engineering
Having learnt about this exciting opportunity available at KBR through Gradcracker, I made it my utmost priority to apply. I am a current third year undergraduate student reading Chemical Engineering at University College London. I hope to be considered for a summer internship role with the intention of gaining valuable insight into a career within this industry and what it entails, before embarking upon my final year of university.
KBR is renowned for being the world’s largest and most diverse providers of engineering, procurements and construction services to the hydrocarbon industry, amongst others. The firm has consistently displayed tremendous performance and technical flair for more than 90 years, working in the best interests of clients. I will be learning from industry leaders on how to provide a safe, innovative and robust solution to chemical processes whilst considering implications of handling, producing and treating a wide range of process fluids. I have studied a module in Process Engineering in which I found Risk assessment and ALARP of particular interest. I learnt the importance of striking a fine balance between cost and safety on a risk-weighted basis. In a team, I will directly aid client companies in overcoming complex technical challenges such as designing a PFD, and optimising and improving the operation of equipment. My desire to work at KBR roots from their unrivalled portfolio of experience that enables them to provide pioneering solutions to both offshore and onshore projects worldwide.
I was particularly impressed by KBR’s achievement award from the “Hydrocarbon Processing” magazine for their execution of the pre-FEED of the entire complex of ‘Project Sadara’. The ability to provide FEED analysis on a significantly larger scale to a chemical complex containing 26 integrated world-scale manufacturing plants, makes me enthusiastic and eager to work within the KBR Process Engineering team. The achievement award demonstrates KBR are able to deliver exceptionally high quality outsourced projects, regardless of project size. Currently, in my 3rd year design project, we are designing a chemical plant which converts ethylene into styrene. We conducted a FEED analysis on the plant to simulate technical requirements, operating costs, and the hazards involved. I had the opportunity to experiment with various concepts such as process optimisation through the use of computational modelling, HAZOP studies through extensive research of both operating conditions and chemicals and costs using CAPEX and OPEX. I believe this enriching experience is directly applicable to the role of a Process Engineer, ensuring I add value from an early stage.
Participating in the ‘How to Change the World’ challenge, exposed me to the work conducted in public sector projects, an area I find deeply fulfilling. I understand that KBR services both the public and private sector, which will ensure I tackle an exciting variety of work. Tutoring and mentoring young students part-time has strengthened my leadership and time management skills. Furthermore, I enhanced my the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, a skill I hope to bring to the consulting element of the role. During the academic year 2014-15, I participated in two West-End variety shows as a performer. Here, I was part of a group for 5 months, rehearsing with other students from an array of cultural backgrounds. I believe this regular teamwork and receipt of critical feedback helped build my teamwork skills. I found this experience deeply rewarding and I am confident I will feel a similar sense of achievement upon project completion at KBR.
Parallel to academia, I have invested a lot of time into the co-presidency role for “UCLU Tamil Society”, one of UCL’s fastest growing cultural societies. The role entailed liaising with presidents from similar societies nationally, to co-ordinate fundraising events such as the ‘New Year Boat Party’ and ‘Breaking the Silence Campaign’. The strong relationships developed as a team through my management, drove the increased popularity for our events – reflected in greater ticket sales over previous years. I believe this role helped me acquire a strong set of skills; interpersonal, teamwork and communicational. During my career as a Process Engineer I hope to establish, nurture and further develop client relationships effectively whilst working at KBR.
A summer internship at KBR will provide the perfect opportunity to adapt and evolve to various challenges posed by clients regarding the hydrocarbon industry. I hope to excel through exploring a range of challenges, offshore and onshore coupled with constant peer group learning to overcome complex engineering challenges.I am confident that I will be placed in the division which will best utilise my skillset and give me an unparalleled learning experience.
Thank you for taking the time to assess my application, and I look forward to hearing from you.
