I am a XXX year student at University College London (UCL),majoring in BSc Statistics and Management for Business. I have a keen interest in a career path in strategy consulting and would therefore like to apply for a role in the summer associate programme at L.E.K. Consulting.

Strategy consulting stands out to me as a career where I can solve problems, make an impact, and hone my teamwork and leadership skills. The opportunity to work with company executives, mostly CEOs, and solve their hardest problems as a graduate seems to me both challenging and exciting. Besides, I can develop my entrepreneurial spirit through the broad exposure to wide client base and multiple industries on different projects, and even in different countries, which would be an experience like no other. Being able to see tangible impacts of my work further motivates me to continuously deliver the best results for clients.

L.E.K. appeals to me in 3 main aspects. The first is market expertise. L.E.K’s market insights strike me as one of the most inspiring within the industry. I was impressed with how Mr. Michel Brekelmans outlined in the Chinese Business Review the recent trend of multinational industrial companies improving their sales force effectiveness in China due to the fragmented local market and increasing competition from domestic producers. This goes in line with my observation of the business environment in China during my internship in Shanghai last summer. The second is L.E.K.’s commitment to preserving work-life balance for its employees. The low-travel model within L.E.K. facilitates a strong bond of unity within the office, whilst international opportunities are also available within L.E.K. through the SWAP program, which an associate at the London office recommended me after his completion of programme in New York. The third is environmental responsibility. The fact that L.E.K. is the first global management firm to become carbon neutral exemplifies L.E.K.’s active engagement in CSR, which is important to a socially aware individual like me.

My previous summer internship in Avia-Tek, an aerospace consultancy in Shanghai, shaped me into a problem-solver and a quick-adapter to new industries. Working in the Chinese aviation market, I was assigned to customise a business model for a HK$7m A320 aircraft project with my seniors and lead a 1-week internal web development project. The hands-on experience in strategic planning trained me in becoming a freethinking leader who can fit into the intellectually stimulating working environment that EY promotes. I am also convinced that EY is a place where I can contribute as an independent thinker, demonstrated by my successful publication titled “Financial News−Year In Review 2014/15” on an online blog called The Market Mogul. Writing financial analysis not only refined my quantitative and qualitative grounding as a professional, but also equipped me with the business acumen to cope with today’s ever-changing business environment.

Besides, my passion of striving towards “Building a Better Working World” is gradually developed through my experience in running the Investment Society as the Social and Sponsorship Executive. My team successfully secured HK$35000 sponsorship from global financial institutions such as UBS, which allows the society to organise large-scale career events for UCL students. My leading role as the President of the Music Department back in high school made me realise the importance of taking initiative to lead and inspire, and further prepared me to take up managerial roles at EY in the near future.
