I am a second year law student at College of Law, and I write to you today to express my interest in the summer associate opportunity with FIRM next summer, specifically with the firm’s tax practice. The focus and accomplishments of your firm’s tax practice are congruous with my interests in tax controversy and cross-borders tax regulation. I believe this internship would provide the ideal opportunity to pursue my desire to work with various tax challenges given the firm’s international recognition for transactional tax law.

My summer experience interning for COMPANY general counsel showed me that I enjoy balancing projects under multiple attorneys, being attentive to details, and working in teams. This civil engineering company has allowed me to review contracts, manage databases of legal substance, and engage in contract disputes. Additionally, the recent acquisition of COMPANY has also introduced me to various responsibilities regarding mergers and acquisitions. Having been part of a company that often resorts to outside counsel for assistance, I have come to understand the importance of providing clients with outstanding legal service. This summer internship is a gratifying experience that affirms my desire to practice law.

My interest in tax law stems from everyday interactions with tax. Whether it is the sales tax placed on groceries or the annual income tax, it has an overwhelming influence on our society. With the advancement towards a more globally integrated society, it is becoming even more imperative to understand the influence of tax on an international scale. I will refine my understanding of tax law by taking Federal Income Tax & Policy, Corporation Taxation, and State and Local Taxation this upcoming year.

In addition to my interest in tax law, I will bring to your firm writing and research skills I have developed during my first year at College of Law. I know that spending this summer with the firm’s tax practice would offer an invaluable opportunity to see how attorneys use these skills to represent client and government interests in tax issues.
