Sample cover letter for Internship position at M and G
summer intern
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to apply for the 2017 Investment Internship Scheme. I am a fourth year Biochemistry and Management student, studying at Imperial College London. My degree has consisted of three years of Biochemistry and I will study Economics and Management at Imperial College Business School in October.
I am extremely ambitious and driven, so working for a firm with individuals who have the same mind-set, is something that is extremely important to me. Hence a company that is one of the highest performers in its industry, such as M&G, would be my ideal employer. This is shown by its prestigious title as “Active Manager of the Year” for 2015 in the Pensions Age Awards. Through my own research and speaking to M&G employees, I have been extremely impressed by its unique corporate culture. In particular, its focus on encouraging innovation and to challenge convention. This converges well with the skills my biochemistry degree has nurtured. This includes the ability to question and scrutinise what is deemed to be fact and look at novel and innovative ways to answer questions.
Due to my innate curiosity and love of problem solving, I feel that investment research and investment management would be areas in which I would thrive. My passion for the financial markets, stems from studying economics at A-Level and has been expanded through participating in the finance society at university. To further explore these fields, this summer I enrolled on a nine week course at the London School of Economics. I studied three modules; Corporate Finance, Business Analysis and Valuation; and Security Analysis and Valuation. I chose to embark on this programme to enrich my understanding of the financial sector, learning the theory through lectures and then applying it to case studies in tutorials.
The theory that I had learnt during these courses was then put into practice, during an insight week at Sandford C. Bernstein, in the equity research department, covering the medical technology sector. These courses together with this placement, further highlighted the attraction of a career in this field.
During the summer of 2015 I worked at Imperial College London in the Biomedical Engineering Department. The first part of my project involved deep analysis of the current scientific literature and finding key pieces of information amongst vast quantities of data, which enhanced my analytical skills. Planning the experiment required the use of problem solving skills to create solutions and theories for the gaps in the scientific literature. The experiments themselves required a high degree of organisation and tenacity due to the unpredictable nature of working with live cells.
My challenging academic studies, diversified work experience and sporting achievements, I believe has moulded me into a strong candidate for this position.
Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
