Sample cover letter for Internship position at MCKINSEY
Intern
Dear Sir/Madam ,
I am writing this to express my interest in joining the Associate Intern Programme at McKinsey &
Company . I am currently a penultimate year student at Imperial College London pursuing a degree
in Materials with Management . I was exposed to this programme by an employee of yours at a
careers fair who talked extremely positively about the working culture and the work done at the
firm. After reading more about the firm and the programme itself I felt that my talents align perfectly
with what McKinsey is looking for .
My interest in consulting is fairly newborn and primarily originates from my desire and passion for
solving complex problems by coming up with innovative solutions . Moreover consultancy appeals
to me due to its diversity ; consultants get to work on projects which range from mergers in the
automotive industry to assisting health care organisations in expanding . I personally have always
been a “jack of all trades” kind of person and this was a major factor behind studying materials
science at university since I didn’t want to limit myself to a particular field . While researching about
McKinsey I have also had the opportunity to practise case studies available at the firm’s website
and have particularly enjoyed the mathematically and analytically rigorous approach taken while
addressing the numerous frameworks of a case .
As far as the question “ Why McKinsey ?” is concerned I feel there is no one answer to this. Firstly
McKinsey stands out for me because of its commitment to delivering world class consultancy
services to its clients so they can in turn have an impact on the society . In terms of diversity of
clientele McKinsey is unparalleled. Furthermore the company’s “one firm” policy provides
employees the perfect environment to excel. The opportunity to have a global impact whilst
working within a stimulating and thriving environment really excites me about undertaking this
internship at McKinsey .
I believe the scientific and mathematically challenging nature of my course has equipped me well
enough for the complex analytical challenges that consultants face on a day to day basis .
However I haven’t really limited myself to just science and engineering related courses . Over the
course of my degree so far I have taken up courses ranging from philosophy to Spanish in order to
broaden my horizons . Furthermore I have taken up a range of extra curricular activities in order to
develop my skill set . As treasurer for the Pakistani Society at Imperial I managed to raise £2500 in
sponsorship money from organisations such as Deloitte and Open London . In addition to this I
was an integral part of the organising team for Shaam 2015 which is the society’s flagship charity
dinner which more than 300 people attended and was given the responsibility of preparing the
event’s budget which was of over £7500. I am also serving as the Marketing and Media Officer for
this year’s TEDx Imperial ; my work mainly involves researching and implementing effective
marketing techniques . Such experiences have allowed me to hone my team-working , problem
solving , analytical and organisational skills . I feel these set of skills coupled with my desire to
solve problems in such a way that societies and organisations can grow would make me a valuable
asset for McKinsey .
I look forward to hearing back from you . If you have any queries do not hesitate to contact me at
[email protected] . Thank you for your time and consideration .
Yours Faithfully ,
Aqdas Kamal
