Sample cover letter for Internship position at Macquarie
Investment Banking
Dear Sir/Madam
After speaking with (insert name), an incoming analyst, I learnt about Macquarie’s meritocratic culture demonstrated by their open office structure, where interns have the opportunity to sit next to senior employees. This appeals to me as it allows for junior analysts to be given direct exposure to industry experts, allowing them to learn how their senior colleagues think and solve problems on a daily basis. Having 46 years of unbroken profitability demonstrates Macquarie’s pursuit and execution of excellence. This consistent excellence allows Macquarie to be involved in financial advisory projects of such magnitude whereby they shape the landscape of an industry, this is why I want to intern with your firm. This opportunity will provide me the chance to develop my understanding of not only the valuation processes involved in financial advisory but to also deepen my understanding of the intricacies of the debt origination process.
Having interned for Mace Macro in their client services finance team, I had the chance to lead the creation of a cost model plan that estimated the value of an RBS contract the firm were bidding on. This required me to gather financial data, calculate an average site manager’s wage, factor in expected costs and guaranteed returns, then build the cost model, which was pitched to the commercial team and used in the final bid. This internship created an interest in infrastructure financial advisory, which is when Macquarie capital’s infrastructure, utilities and renewables group caught my attention. Macquarie’s early identification of the importance of the infrastructure sector, has allowed it to become a market leader by a significant margin, recently shown by their ability to successfully execute the £645 million Mersey Gateway project. Furthermore Macquarie has become a renowned leader through its entrepreneurial and innovative approach in their principal investing. Macquarie’s strong balance sheet allows them to extend their commitment to their clients through investing in projects like the Freeport LNG, where they committed a $120 million. This entrepreneurial approach is highly attractive to me, as I am very driven to succeed and this allows you to go beyond what is expected to seamlessly deliver outstanding solutions. Receiving a bonus at the end of my internship with Mace Macro for exceptional contribution highlights my ambition to always exceed expectations.
Being Co-director of the corporate finance club I have been at the forefront of helping the society to achieve excellence and continually strive to over-achieve. Macquarie’s core value of ‘Fulfilment for our people’ aligns with my experience of leading the organisation of the university’s first 3-day finance event, which involved organising a series of finance talks and CV workshops to give over 700 students a greater insight into Investment Banking. This experience taught me about successfully working long hours under pressure with tight deadlines. The internship would allow me to utilise my strengths of quantitative analysis, communication skills and teamwork. These skills are demonstrated through my role as head of finance for Aquor, a social enterprise. I created the financial bookkeeping and business growth model using excel, which allowed me to keep an accurate record of our transactions and explore other potential business opportunities. This experience has allowed me to critically analyse and develop a financial strategy through working in a small team, which has in turn allowed us to provide access to clean water for around 200 people in a rural community in Cameroon.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application to Macquarie Group. I look forward to hearing from you.
