Sample cover letter for Internship position at Mars & Co
Associate
I am writing to express my interest in the Summer Internship opportunity available at your firm. I have recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master of Laws (LL.M) prior to which I obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Edinburgh. My intention is to branch out of the legal field with the readily transferrable skills I’ve developed and fully pursue a career in consulting. The rationale behind my decision lies in the fact that consulting is the field in which I will be able to put to use all of the education, particularly in case analysis, that I’ve acquired in law school. As a fresh graduate there is no better avenue I could wish to pursue other than the broad exposure in varying industry sectors/functions that an internship at OC&C would provide. OC&C is of particular interest to me because of the unique position that the firm finds itself in – the Goldilocks paradox. The strategy consulting landscape today largely comprises the safe, secure established powerhouses or low-cost, partner-heavy specialized boutique firms. It is in this sea of small firms, which are small and cold, and large firms, whose size may simply be too large, that OC&C has the opportunity to shine.
In terms of experience I have acted as a consultant to a NGO in Brazil where, over the course of two months, I helped formulated strategic direction, mapped out various processes and introduced the concept of key performance indicators as a measure of efficiency. I learned a great deal about the collaborative nature of the process; I understood that one must work in partnership with the client to achieve the desired result. Together we resolved the administrative crisis that the organization was experiencing by increasing accountability and identifying bottlenecks. Furthermore, I have lived in the Middle East, Europe and North America respectively. If the benefits of a consultant’s externality are the varied experiences they’ve had outside the client’s firm, I know my world experience will serve the company well. This multicultural background has taught me to apply myself in different cultures, with people of different backgrounds, in varying contexts. The legal internship I completed at Clyde & Co. LLP strengthened my data collection skills and refined my professional communication skills, both written and oral.
OC&C emphasizes its creative approach to solving client problems, and encourages the sharing of eclectic interests. Outside of my academic and work experience I am currently launching a photography website, having failed (but learnt a lot!) from my previous entrepreneurial attempt at launching a clothing label. I have what it takes to be a successful consultant; I just need to be given the opportunity to prove it. I look forward to our further correspondence.
