Sample cover letter for Internship position at Morgan Stanley

POSITION:

Summer Analyst

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a second year student at the London School of Economics (LSE), pursuing a BSc in Accounting and Finance. I am particularly interested in Equity Research, and would like to apply for a Summer Internship position within Morgan Stanley.

The wide range of research, strong client interaction and great mix of qualitative and quantitative analysis are just some of the reasons why this area appeals to me. Researching the secondary markets, spotting investment opportunities and recommending market strategies to clients is what interests me the most. Morgan Stanley has especially captured my attention with its strength in Equity Sales and Trading business. The third quarter’s results for Morgan Stanley were stunning, as Institutional Securities net revenue was 4.3 billion, depicting that Equity Sales and Trading business remains a top franchise in the industry. The achievements of the division imply challenging, complex and diverse tasks in the Research department and this enhances my interest in this particular area. Moreover, what really appeals to me about Morgan Stanley is the character and culture of the organization; with employees from diverse backgrounds in terms of work experience, gender and nationality. I like the idea of working in an inclusive environment where different perspectives are valued, as this spirit fosters innovative thinking.

I have a firm belief in working consistently to achieve set of goals and this is demonstrated by my exam results at LSE. I have attained an overall average above 70%, something that I was aiming right from the beginning of my degree. Studying at LSE improved my analytical skills as I have learned how to visualize, gather relevant information and solve complex problems. Most of my modules are based on statistical inference, whereas others require strong mathematical abilities; skills that are vital within Equity Research.

This summer, I have participated in a one-month volunteering program at the Bank of Cyprus. I have observed the operations of three different departments, including the Institutional Wealth and Global Markets department. My major task there was to observe different bonds and equities and report my views on the different factors that affected their prices and performance. In complete honesty, the thing I have appreciated the most while working there is that your own creativity is the only boundary in becoming a successful researcher. I realized that appetite for learning as much as you can, passion for financial markets and determination to succeed are essential characteristics for someone who wants to pursue a career in research. Furthermore, I have demonstrated strong teamwork and leadership skills during my two year military service. Being in the Special Forces taught me that in order to accomplish any mission you have to trust your team, you have to inspire your team to trust you and most importantly, to take the initiative and make critical decisions in critical moments. I strongly believe that these skills and qualities are crucial for this job.

I thank you in advance for taking the time to read my application. I look forward to discuss my application with you and outline how I can contribute my skills for the best interest of Morgan Stanley.

Yours Sincerely
