Sample cover letter for Internship position at Nanyang Technological University

I am a second year student pursuing Electronics and Communication Engineering at Indian institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, India.

I came across your research work and going through your recent projects motivated me to apply for a summer research position under your able guidance and contribute in your ongoing projects.

The concept of artificial intelligence has captivated my intrigue since my childhood days. I was left amazed to see how a mere mobile phone could recognize faces or unlock through scanning fingerprints. This very interest of mine culminated in my pursuing graduation in Electronics Engineering. As I research more, I come across the vast and tangible applications of MACHINE LEARNING and IMAGE PROCESSINGin the real world. After all, a picture speaks a thousand words.

The natural motivation I had led me to work on a project to build an autonomous robot based on the principles of image processing (coded in Open CV) in Techfest, the Annual Techno-Management fest of IIT Bombay. This project helped me acquire an in-depth knowledge of simulation tools such as MATLAB. I also built a semi-autonomous robot that is controlled solely by wrist movements using Arduino IDE. The course on systems and signals only gave further impetus to my interest in signal processing.

CURRENTLY, I am working on a project that involves application of Gaussian process regression to design probabilistic inference algorithms (BIG DATA ANALYSIS) for digital communication and evaluating their performance (coded in MATLAB). I shall also be working on a project on Subjective Image Quality Analysis involving designing an algorithm to extract measurements from an image that are salient to image quality. The teamwork skills and practical perspective to be gained from such projects will, I believe, help me tremendously in further study and research.

The intense training at IIT(BHU) has equipped me with the required skill set and good work ethics. With my penchant for learning and disciplined nature I hope I will be able to make the best of this opportunity and make a positive contribution to the research.

This project will provide me a chance to go beyond academics and add practical comprehension to my pool of knowledge while allowing me to engage in experiments which undergraduates are generally not exposed to.

My intended visit period shall be from mid may till the end of July.
