Resident Program Assistant
GOT THE JOB? Yes
Dear Melissa,
I remember when I first moved here to the U.S, the whole process of moving to a new country was not easy, especially that I had to start looking for my first apartment, which was something new to me. After looking for a while, asking around and checking one apartment after the other, I ended up in the perfect spot, and that was Goose Hollow.
Why Goose Hollow? Aside from the fact that your front office was really helpful and helped me navigate the housing contract easily, I admire your core values. You respect diversity; privacy and you provide students with both affordable and clean housing. I still remember taking the shuttle bus when it was raining outside and thinking how great that service was. The Resident Assistants were always there to help and went above and beyond to make my experience in Goose Hollow memorable and worth telling, which made it the first place to recommend when I get asked about Housing around Portland.
I’m Muhanad Saleh, a dedicated, experienced mentor and a group leader. I believe I possess the passion, commitment and expertise to contribute greatly to Goose Hollow, and am honored to submit my application to serve as your next Lead Resident Ambassador.
What specific values can I bring to Goose Hollow and the Lead Resident Ambassador?
Resident Assistant experience. For the past two years, I have worked as a Resident Program Assistant with a diverse group of students who come from 18 different countries and I lived with them in Portland State University dorms. Through the duration of the program, which was 5 weeks, I planned weekly activities with the help of my team, led weekly meetings and provided my assistant with developing their civic engagement projects. I made my self-available to answer their questions; listened to their problems and helped them resolve their conflicts. One thing that the students will for sure remember about me is the fact that I was helpful, respectful and they admired my calmness in high pressure and charged situations.
Mentorship and leadership. This is the primary focus of the work I do with the University Studies Department now. I work with freshman students and help them navigate their first year as college students in Portland State. I help them by actively listening, facilitating their discussions and displaying a strong leadership model for them to follow. My Supervisors admire my willingness to help and volunteer in the projects that the department constructs and the fact that I made my self available to help with the department interviews and the training process for the new hires.
Prioritization and problem-solving abilities. Devising effective solutions to problems faced daily at the work place is one of my top priorities. I have worked full time as both an Exam Office Coordinator and a teacher while going to college for 4 years. I am really good when it comes to prioritizing in the place of work and dedicated to achieve my desired goals. I was given a pay raise three times within the duration of 4 years while working with International House Organization as an acknowledgment for my ethics and hard work.
Being Bilingual. My ability to speak both Arabic and English fluently has always come in handy with the jobs I held since moving to the U.S. My Supervisors found my language skills to be very helpful especially that Portland now has so many international students who come here every year to study. I remember that Goose Hollow had a fair number of Arabic speaking residents, who would appreciate having someone to communicate with.
Melissa, I’m confident my mentorship expertise, talents and leadership would serve Goose Hollow well. My attached resume offers more details on my accomplishments. I would appreciate meeting to discuss in more detail how I can contribute to Goose Hollow. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
