Sample cover letter for Internship position at SMBC

POSITION:

Business analyst

Dear Hiring Manager:

I am writing to show my interest in your Sales/Trading 2016 Summer Internship program, which was advertised on the LionShare website at Columbia University. During

I am currently studying statistics at Columbia University and will receive my M.A. degree in December 2016. I want to develop my career in the field of investment management, and I have been longing for an opportunity to become an integral part of an investment company and learn the full process of investment, from market research to financial analysis.

My experience includes projects in programming and courses in finance, which makes me believe that I process the hard skills for the necessary programming and financial modeling work. For example, I have conducted a project to build a trading system via Python coding. Through the project, I applied the adaboost algorithm to automatically select technical indicators for generating profitable trading strategies. I also went through the portfolio allocation process and adopted stop loss actions to make my strategies more practical. Finally, I back-tested my strategies using the historical data of stocks and visualized the performance. The project generated reasonable results and was awarded an A.

In addition, I am also a good team player with strong interpersonal skills. During my last internship in a consulting firm, I played an important part in brainstorming ideas within the team, meanwhile, I was very effective in communicating between the analysis team and the BI team for data mining collaboration.

Finally, I am very interest in the high tech industries, and I will definitely enjoy the work of investigating the market and the new companies in this field. As a result, I would really like to be considered for your Spring internship program. Any questions with regard to the opportunity and my competency are welcomed, my phone number is (646)830-4229, and my e-mail address is [email protected].

Sincerely,

Yeyun Chen
