Sample cover letter for Internship position at Scottish Government

Dear Mr. Street,

I am writing this letter in response to the Scottish Government Internship advert. I believe that my knowledge

and experience, together with my strong interest in public policy, will make me particularly suited for this role. I

am passionate about positively impacting people’s lives. I was inspired by the work that the Scottish government

does to meet its objectives of making Scotland wealthier and fairer, healthier, safer and stronger, smarter, and

greener. I am poised to contribute to this effort.

The job description states that you are looking for a candidate with excellent oral and written communication

skills, strong analytical abilities, well organized and able to build and maintain productive working relationships. I

would like to draw your attention to my most relevant qualifications and experience for these requirements.

I have developed excellent research and writing skills during my masters in Economics at the University of

xxx. My dissertation for the course was aimed at contributing as further research on governance‐related

issues and analysed the relationship between the quality of economic governance and the level of income for

the 27 countries of the European Union. During the programme in Operational Research that I recently

completed at the University of xxx, I was able to apply advanced analytical methods (e.g. forecasting,

optimization, simulation) to solve real business problems. As part of the course I undertook a summer internship

with xxx working on a consulting project for a real client and writing my dissertation. This has

helped me acquire new technical and analytical abilities.

During my second year of bachelor studies, I joined xxx, a student NGO. As a

member of the Economics club, I provided direction for the club’s projects and I had the opportunity to improve

my teamwork and leadership skills. In the club we often debated topics from the areas of public policy and

macroeconomics. This has helped me polish my public speaking and communication skills. My professional

experience with xxx exemplifies my organizational, time management skills, and ability to work under

pressure. I performed all facets of a major audit under tight deadlines with a high degree of accuracy which

required a close eye for detail. As an auditor I understood the importance of long‐term client relationships and I

invested in delivering high quality work and building trust.
