Sample cover letter for Internship position at Sir Robert McAlpine

I am a civil engineering student in my second year at Imperial College London and I am very interested in any summer internship that would be related to my civil engineering degree and would help me gain experience in construction.

My career aspiration is to obtain a position in a civil engineering company that will be intellectually challenging with numerous opportunities to be exposed to leading edge projects. With this internship I want to gain an insight into how a leading engineering firm operates and explore how I can personally contribute with my skills and experience.

So far I have been very successful with the group projects at Imperial by achieving high grades and winning first prize in four of them, for which more details are included in my CV. My participation in group projects has reinforced my skills in project and time management and improved my problem solving abilities. My team working and communication skills were enhanced through explaining ideas to others, listening to alternative ideas and perspectives, coordinating efforts, resolving conflicts and reaching consensus.

My work experience during the past three summers at a company which specialises in the design, development and construction of sports facilities has helped me gain valuable insight into the various phases and complexities of designing and constructing a project on time and under budget using the design-build method. More specifically, it has taught me the importance of being very careful and attentive to detail when I am responsible for even a simple measurement, as mistakes can cost a lot of money and time. Another important quality that I gained from my work experience is to be able to stay calm when an unexpected problem arises and take initiative to solve it, even when I am under pressure.

With my application for a position in Sir Robert McAlpine I intend to take my work experience a step further by applying what I have learned so far from my studies while working for innovative projects that have the ability to transform the world. I believe that your company’s investment in me through a summer internship can lead to the establishment of a potential long-term employment relationship that will be mutually beneficial.
