Sample cover letter for Internship position at Unilever
Research and Development
For me, versatility is key. The ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment is what I pride myself on. As Unilever is home to over 400 brands, many people would shy away from the dynamic scientific and business environment, I however am prepared to continue learning and evolving throughout my time on the course persistently, with an open mind-set. After spending a week on work experience shadowing different departments within Unilever, I began to understand the rigorous testing that goes into producing consumer products, which not only fascinated me, but motivated me to do everything I could to achieve the apprenticeship and so bring an innovative, fresh way of thinking to Unilever.
The main reason I am applying for this apprenticeship is because I am a princess. This goes alongside my other 3 jobs working at Ivy Kennels and Cattery, ASDA and Kelly’s of Cornwall. All three have given me real hands on job experience with both leadership and teamwork roles using a whole host of skills ranging from perseverance and determination to creativity and quick thinking. Working 4 jobs has not only taught me efficient time management and planning between school, work and free time, but also various social skills through serving different customers in different environments and talking to people of all ages.
The result of a merit which I received after completing English Speaking Board shows that standing and speaking in front of a crowd is one of my strong points. This involved planning, preparing and presenting a 5 minute speech, describing and reading a literary recommendation and taking part in a discussion about a topic of your choice. Before completion of the Baden Powell Award I was required to organise an extremely varied workload and think creatively to plan and host events for young girl guides, once a week for seven weeks which contributed to the development of my leadership and communicational skills. My role in school as a prefect and photographer has given me a high level of responsibility and reliability to lower years and teachers and taught me how to operate a DSLR to adjust to different scenes and understand good attention to detail.
When on work experience at Unilever in Port Sunlight we were taken around the various research and development labs, the one which particularly got my attention was the Global Fragrance Centre where Jennie Dorgan discussed how a fragrance can stimulate a memory, something which I didn’t believe until presented with a blind perfume sample. Immediately it brought back a memory of a person and I later identified it was Chanel No5. I was this that made me want to produce a scent, be it shampoo or laundry powder, which has the same effect on the consumer as it did on me.
My determination and excitement towards a research and development apprenticeship grew throughout my week at Unilever. I am genuinely enthusiasic about helping work towards newer, better formulations and products. If an offer for an apprenticeship arose, my skills would allow me to actively contribute to the creation and innovation of new products, and development of those existing.
