Sample cover letter for Full Time position at United Launch Alliance
Engineer
It was through the motivation of my grandfather, a WW2 B-17 Bombardier, and the shared hobbies of rocketry and astronomy with my father that started my passion for space exploration. At a young age, I was greatly inspired by Carl Sagan’s literature and TV series, ‘Cosmos’. I developed the dream to one day contribute towards the advancement of the human race, and to help continue our exploration of the universe. After 9 years of education and immersive experiences, I am closer than ever to reaching that dream.
From viewing my enclosed resume, you may see that I have gained much experience through research, work, and project based experiences. However, this two page overview of my technical and professional history cannot depict how passionate I am about aerospace engineering. There is no doubt that I am befitting (and eager) for a position incorporating fluid, thermal, and mechanical elements in a design or development capacity. However, there is much more that I plan to bring to the company.
I take pride in all aspects of my work, no matter how grand or trivial they may be. I gain a sense of satisfaction and appreciation when bridging the gap between a need and success, especially when there is a capacity to learn and apply myself. For instance, my two year venture of researching scramjet engines started with a nothing but a dusty linear actuator and the need to understand a compressible flow field. The fruition of my hard work will not only be a thesis and advanced degree, but also an everlasting feeling of accomplishment and a wealth of knowledge. Also, I believe that strong leadership and teamwork is essential in the engineering process. When I was given the opportunity to serve as Project Manager of (my university's) Rocket Team, not only was it my chance to learn and apply new leadership skills, but to also reflect an ideology of that I had grown to appreciate through years of working and managing in part-time jobs. I did not command. Rather, I encouraged others to take command of themselves, and their ideas. Yes, we were all ecstatic for finishing top 10 in the national competition. It was our testament of overcoming many sleepless nights and failures. Yet I found myself content with establishing a legacy of friendship, excellence, and opportunity within the club. My hope is to contribute towards a similar legacy at ULA.
United Launch Alliance stands as a leader in this era of space exploration. It is my greatest aspiration for the beginning phase of my engineering career to align the success of the company. Please allow me to further discuss my potential for employment in an interview process. I am looking forward to the chance to continue history with ULA.
