Sample cover letter for Internship position at University of Massachusetts Amherst

POSITION:

IT Department

Dear Mr. H

I was excited to find that your staff is hiring students, even those incoming, for a position in the University of Massachusetts IT department, and would love to be able to take a spot on your team. I was recommended to write to you for this fall after meeting you and some of the technology department during a spring open house. I thought this would be an interesting experience that explores a field I have a lot of personal interest in.

My background from a work and service perspective comes from four years experience at large convenience store chain Quick Chek. I worked first as a general team member and am currently in training to be a shift leader, with responsibilities to food service, customer relations, financial management, and general store keeping. I also spent a small amount of time working as a floor clerk at Staples for their technology department, where I helped customers by providing relevant information about consumer technology. From a worker standpoint, I have good experience coordinating and working with others as a team, and being able to as necessary take a leadership role, but still understand when a situation calls for it, and when it calls for following the leadership of others.

However my work experience is only a reflection of my ability to work, coordinate and communicate with others, and solve problems with other people. My experience with Technology and IT comes from personal extracurricular interest, and my role in several programs ran through my high school. I have always had an interest in technology, both software and hardware. I’ve written software and manipulated existing programs to solve problems or simply experiment. I’ve also ripped apart and put back together a fair share of gadgets and gizmos, and have a lot of interest in simply figuring out what can make something tick.

My school has provided a lot of opportunity to explore this and help others. I currently am the president of the Code Clubs, the manager of the student IT program, and a step in leader of the technology club (I helped with a decision to remove a formal leadership so to allow flexible projects to be developed and collaborated on). The tech and code clubs have given me opportunities to play with and find applications for software and hardware, participating in hackathons and taking apart computers. In the IT program, I actively work with students and staff to solve any technical problems they have, fix hardware and software problems, and find ways to use technology to improve my school. Along with all of this, I intend to become a Computer Science major and am currently on the exploratory track for informatics and computing.

I have experience in Windows and Mac based software, have troubleshooted and solved problems involving Google Networking and OS specific networking, worked with Linux based computers (Such as Raspberry Pi) and command lines, and have hardware experience with the internals of computers and local network hardware such as wiring and setting up switchboards.

Along with these activities, I have been a leader of several volunteer programs that were demonstrations of my ability to manage large projects, including a Computer Science Camp for kids, and a charity video game tournament, and a fencing camp has a head coach.

I hope this cover letter gives a reflection of my abilities both as a cooperative worker and passionate technology enthusiast. I’m confident I can offer you the skills needed to approach and solve problems and be an excellent addition to your team

Sincerely,
