Sample cover letter for Internship position at University of Wahington
TA
Professor XX
My name is IXX, a first-year MSIM student. I would like to apply to the teaching assistant position for INFX 501/502/505 for Fall 2015.
I have various experience and enthusiasm for teaching and solving problems. Last summer I worked as an English language teacher in New Oriental Education Group. I instructed students, most of who were high school students, in preparing for their SAT and TOEFL tests. My methods focused on improving speaking and listening skills, as these are the weakest parts to most Chinese students. After class, I would conduct formal or informal surveys to collect feedback from students, and improve my teaching methods per suggestion. One of my students boosted his writing score from 15 to 24 (out of 30) after my classes and I felt really fulfilled.
Before that, I have also been a teaching assistant at Harvard Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC). The course was “Creative Thinking” taught by a senior student from Harvard. I worked with her to conduct research before each class, prepare handouts and exams, and organize extracurricular activities.
I’ve also been a volunteer English teacher when I was studying in Spain. It was interesting since I was not very proficient in Spanish and sometime I had to find a clever way to make myself understood and teach students English. I love to interact with students with different background and I love teaching because it benefits teachers as well as students.
As for these courses, INFX 501/502/505, I am quite familiar with these topics. I have taken Information Architecture course (IMT535), Relational Database (INFX543) and Principal of Information Project (IMT 587), and they all equip me with sufficient knowledge to be a great TA for the fundamental courses. I personally love the project management class, since I started to use project management software 3 years ago when I worked in PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Last quarter I led a consulting project with a client who has a small business in Seattle. During the project, I realize that successfully conducting a project is not that easy. It is vital to keep up the schedule, properly allocate the resources, monitor risks as well as engage all the stakeholders. I think I will communicate my experiences with students if I can be a TA, and this will create some interesting dialogues.
I sincerely hope that I can have the opportunity to be a TA, and make contribution to these courses. Please feel free to contact me by phone at XXX or by email at XX.
Thank you for considering my application. Attached is my resume.
Sincerely,
XXX
