I couldn’t agree more. But as a new graduate starting a career with dual degrees in Environmental Studies and Economics, where do I begin? Broadly, I wish to be part of a team that innovates new strategies for old problems, either by finding ways to translocate models which have proven successful elsewhere or by creating an entirely new approach.
My Environmental Studies training has given me substantial skills in analysis (testing, identifying relationships, analogies, patterns/structures, data evaluation), investigation (including designing experiments and assessing risks), technical skills (processing and tabulating data, solving quantitative problems, survey sampling, using lab equipment, computer computation/simulation) and communication (technical/nontechnical organizing, planning, writing, speaking).
Environmental Economics has provided me with a solid understanding of the real-world economic effects of environmental policies. Particular issues include the costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies to deal with air pollution, water quality, toxic substances, solid waste, and global warming, with a focus on valuation, externalities, public goods, common property, market failure, economic policy solutions, and policy analysis.
Going back to my original question: may I begin with your team at the World Wildlife Fund? I have attached my résumé, which summarizes my training and experience but cannot replace discussion between people. If we talk, I am confident I will convince you that I have the technical skills you’re looking for as well as the intangible qualities—enthusiasm, energy, dedication, sense of mission, and intelligence—that characterize the best on your team.
