Sample cover letter for Internship position at World Bank

POSITION:

Internship

Respected Sir/ Ma’am,

I am a former Young Professional and Financial Analyst with the Government of India, and am writing to apply for the Summer Internship program of the Bank. Presently, I am enrolled at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the MSc in Public Policy and Administration program, concluding in September 2014. Both during my engagement with the Govt. of India, and now as a student at LSE, I have been exposed to the working and research done by the Bank. In future, I look forward to working in the area of international development, and the opportunity of interning with the World Bank would be an invaluable tool in familiarising myself with necessary skills and work culture in the development space.

Prior to joining LSE, I completed my MBA with dual specialisation in Banking & Insurance and Finance from the top-ranked university of India and gained hands-on experience as a social entrepreneur, consultant to international NGO, volunteer for community development and joined the Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India as the country's first Financial Analyst. My interest post masters was towards application of finance in governance and regulation, and in a span of 14 months, I worked on complex issues related to Foreign Direct Investments in the country. My seniors also gave me an opportunity to facilitate international trade negotiations, coordinate inter-ministerial board meetings, supervise the website and also work outside my division, where I presented a report on India's ranking in Doing Business in 2011 for the Capital Markets division.

My exposure and commitment to public policy further heightened during my engagement as a Young Professional with the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Infrastructure division of the Planning Commission of India. I gained first-hand knowledge and experience of the consultation process in one of the upcoming sectors of the economy and my work demanded me to work alongside top national and international policy-makers, politicians, experts and senior bureaucrats. During my tenure of 21 months, I worked on a mixed set of assignments, often spearheaded by the Prime Minister's Office including preparation of Concession Agreements for PPP in National Highways, Railways, School Education, Coal Mining and Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract. During some of the meetings, I had brief conversations with the representatives of the Bank, and that has motivated me to apply for this intership.

The internship position at the Bank appeals to me for its potential to impart training in public policy focused at poverty alleviation and shared prosperity. In due course of my academic and professional career, I have been able to work on some independent and institutional research taking the form of publications. I am also trying to learn French, to prepare and acquaint myself to working in a multicultural environment.

Kindly find attached my resume describing my qualifications in detail. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to interact with you or the project/ team member on email or in person to discuss the possibility of a summer internship at any of the offices of the Bank. Being aware of a large pool of applicant for the internship, I would request if you allow me to pursue a follow up on phone or email within the next couple of weeks to arrange an appointment for an interview. I would be happy to provide any further information and clarification about my application. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
