Sample cover letter for Internship position at World Resources Institute
Intern
GOT THE JOB? Yes
To the Human Resources Director:
I am writing to express my interest in the Helms fellowship at World Resources Institution (WRI). I came across this job on your website while searching for internship opportunities at leading think tanks in environmental issues. I am a former journalist turned policy analyst, currently finishing my second Masters degree in public affairs at Indiana University as a Vietnamese Fulbright scholar. An internship at the WRI would allow me to continue my commitment to sustainable development. I feel confident that I could contribute substantively to your organization while consolidating the skills I’ll need for a career in policy analysis.
My interest in environmental issues grew from my work as a journalist in Vietnam. While there, I was able to draw the attention of a national audience to a wide range of critical issues including climate change, urbanization, and sustainability with my comprehensive reporting. Interestingly, in one of my articles, I interviewed the current president of WRI – Dr. Andrew Steer – acting then as the Special Envoy of Climate Change of the World Bank. As I wrote about these issues, I wanted to be more than just an observer. The desire to help develop and implement solutions led me to pursue graduate studies in England and the United States.
At graduate schools, it has become clear to me that effective solutions to crosscutting issues hinge on the design and implementation of sound policies grounded in rigorous analysis. This semester, I am conducting a research project on the magnitude of urbanization and its impacts in Ho Chi Minh City. This ongoing project involves developing an analysis framework, creating key measures, and assessing key policy interventions. Simultaneously, I am participating in a team-based Capstone project to design a comprehensive economic strategy for the city of Bloomington, IN. What struck me the most from these two seemingly unrelated projects is the central role of cities in today’s world. That is why I find the Ross Center’s focus on urban sustainability so appealing.
In addition to my genuine interest in the WRI Ross Center, I would bring to your center my solid writing and research skills, which I have developed from my research-intensive coursework and my experience working as a research assistant. My ability to absorb complex concepts quickly, coupled with my organizational skill, enables me to produce quality research efficiently. Additionally, my journalistic background well prepares me for the communication and outreach component of the job.
I know I will be a valuable addition to your center if given the opportunity. I will graduate on May 7, 2016, and will be available to work for up to six months starting from May 15, 2016. hank you in advance for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
